University of Maine baseball players Troy Martin, Matt McGraw, and Ryan Quintal were named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Team Monday. The Black Bear trio will play in the NECBL All-Star Game Sunday at Cardines Field in Newport, R.I.
McGraw will be the starting catcher for the north division team, Martin is a pitcher on the team, and Quintal is on the same squad as an outfielder.
The NECBL is a wooden bat summer league made up of 12 New England teams with rosters made up entirely of current college players.
McGraw is hitting a team-high .305 for the Holyoke (Mass.) Giants with two home runs, 21 RBIs and 16 runs. He is second in the league in doubles (10), fourth in RBIs, and 10th in batting. Martin is 4-1 with a 0.68 ERA (third-lowest in the league) for the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats. Quintal, who also plays for Keene, is hitting .571with 15 RBIs and also has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Maine’s Serdy gets frosh honor
Offensive lineman-defensive tackle Jake Serdy, who signed a letter of intent to play for Maine, joins five other incoming Atlantic 10 Conference college freshmen who have been selected to play in the prestigious PNC Big 33 Football All-Star Game in Hersey, Penn., Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The 48th annual Classic, played at Hersheypark Stadium, matches the top recently graduated high school players from Pennsylvania and Ohio. It has been called the “Super Bowl of High School Football” and alumni include Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, and Marvin Harrison.
The other players selected include Richmond signees David Horton and Jordan Mitchell, Hofstra’s Vince Bazzone, and Villanova’s Osayi Osunde and Mike Sheridan. At least one Big 33 participant has appeared in every NFL Super Bowl ever played.
UM hockey alumni weekend set
The University of Maine men’s ice hockey program will hold its alumni weekend Sunday and Monday.
The alumni hockey game at 2 p.m. and a 5 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center are the main events on Sunday’s schedule. More than 40 former players are scheduled to attend including 1992 Hobey Baker winner Scott Pellerin and All-Americans Eric Weinrich, Blair Allison, Niko Dimitrakos, Gary Conn, Prestin Ryan, Todd Jackson and other standouts such as Bob Corkum, Garth Snow, and Alfie Michaud.
Monday’s events include the alumni golf tournament at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. Registration will start at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. A lunch and benefit auction will follow the tournament. Reservations can be made by calling 581-1485.
