Camp fare

The Downeast Heritage Museum in Calais will celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, “Living with the Land,” with a woods camp dinner prepared by Dale Speed of the Princeton Rod and Gun Club. The event takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 23. The dinner begins with white cake with frosting, which traditionally is eaten before the rest of the meal because there won’t be room for it later. The menu also includes baked ham and beans, homemade biscuits and strawberry shortcake. To reserve tickets or to attend, call 454-7878.

A guest appearance

A blast from the past will make a special visit to Arborvine in Blue Hill on Thursday, July 28. Tom Weiner, former chef-owner of Nickerson Tavern in Searsport, developed a foodie following in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He’ll return to the area next week to visit family and spend a day with Arborvine chef John Hikade preparing some of his favorite dishes. Weiner and Hikade first worked together in the early ’80s at Firepond restaurant. To reserve a table for a night of fine food and great memories, call 374-2119.

Sweet pickles

Looking for something sweet and wild? Look no further than Peaked Mountain Farm’s Sweet Wild Blueberry Apple Pickle, a gourmet relish that combines wild blueberries, finely chopped apples, vinegar, sugar and a secret mixture of spices. You can sample it from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, during the statewide Open Farm Day. Peaked Mountain Farm is located 16 Ellery’s Lane in Dedham.
