Maine Business School board

Jeffrey Sosnaud of Portland, a former resident of Bangor, has joined the Maine Business School’s board of directors.

The addition of Sosnaud and and Richard Gleason of Auburn brings membership of the advisory panel to 15.

Sosnaud is deputy commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development in Augusta and a former interim associate dean and faculty member in the University of Maine business school.

Gleason is president of Gleason Media Services in Auburn and a graduate of UMaine.

Sosnaud manages the operations of the Department of Economic and Community Development and assists Commissioner Jack Cashman in implementing the policies of the Baldacci administration.

Sosnaud was the founding executive director of the Maine Small Business Alliance, a statewide nonpartisan advocacy organization. A former Bangor resident, he served as a Bangor city councilor and was chairman of the council’s economic and community development committee.

He is a member of the bar in Maine and California. Sosnaud formerly headed his own conflict resolution firm, where he mediated cases for business, government and nonprofit clients. He is a past president of the Maine Association of Dispute Resolution Professionals.

In the 1970s, Sosnaud served as an assistant to civil rights leader Charles Evers, mayor of Fayette, Miss., where he helped design and implement the town’s economic development strategy. He also was an assistant to Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus and worked on a groundbreaking urban parks and economic development initiative.

World Learning Conference

A paper by Douglas Barkey and Dr. Etta Kralovec accepted by the World Learning Conference in Granada, Spain, was presented July 14.

Barkey, vice president for MediaWORKS Enterprise at Training and Development Corp., 100 Center St., discussed the structure and curriculum of the prototype program now operating in Bangor. Both Barkey and Kralovec were part of the TDC design team that created the MediaWORKS Enterprise system.

Mortgage officer

Bangor Savings Bank announced that David Smallwood has joined the bank as a mortgage development officer at the 3 State St. location.

Smallwood has eight years of experience in real estate sales and 11 years in mortgage lending. He holds an associate degree in business management and has completed the Certified Banking program. He is a member of the Bangor Board of Realtors. He also participates in the United Way and YMCA fundraising activities. He lives in Holden with his family.

Round-Up/Spay Today

BANGOR – Overpopulation due to unwanted litters sends millions of animals to shelters each year. Officials at the PETCO store at 777 Stillwater Ave. and the PETCO Foundation said they hope to help break the cycle of pet overpopulation with its upcoming annual Round-Up/Spay Today fundraiser.

During Round-Up/Spay Today 2005, which runs July 24-Aug. 14, PETCO customers will be encouraged to “round up” their purchases to the next highest dollar. Each PETCO store will select one or more spay-neuter charitable partners to receive that store’s fundraising efforts.

In addition, 10 percent of all funds raised will be donated to the Petfinder.com Foundation to assist its spay-neuter efforts. Petfinder.com is the nation’s largest and oldest online adoption community, offering a searchable database of adoptable companion animals. Together, PETCO, Petfinder.com and participating shelters have found homes for millions of animals nationwide.

Spaying and neutering dogs and cats prevents litters of unwanted puppies and kittens and provides health benefits such as decreased risks of ovarian, mammary and testicular cancers. Last year’s Round-Up efforts raised more than $817,000 for local animal welfare organizations across the country. General donations also may be made to the foundation at www.petco.com.

Workers’ comp sessions

Maine superintendent of insurance Alessandro A. Iuppa recently announced three upcoming educational sessions on workers’ compensation insurance for employers and agents. The local session will be held 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, Room 107, Donald P. Corbett Business Building at the University of Maine in Orono.

Topics will include: A discussion of coverage and employer’s liability insurance, a review of the declarations page, claim settlement and policyholder’s responsibilities, premium determination, assessments on policies, pre-payment of premium, premium auditing, coverage issues for sole proprietors and partners, and executive directors, independent contractor status, cancellation and non-renewal issues, consultation services, reasons for premium increases and how to lower workers’ compensation costs.

The sessions are free and directed toward Maine employers and agents.
