BANGOR – Scott R.C. Levy, producing artistic director of Penobscot Theatre, has announced the appointment of Bob Libbey as managing director of the theater company.

Originally from Bangor, Libbey graduated from the University of Maine in 1984 with a degree in theater and broadcasting. He later attended the UMaine Business School and received a master’s degree in 2001. He spent 12 years at Maine Public Television, where he received an Emmy Award for his work on “Made in Maine.”

Libbey also has been an actor, working at the Maine Shakespeare Festival, Penobscot Theatre, Acadia Repertory Theatre and The Theater at Monmouth. He is a founding member of Ten Bucks Theatre Company. He has danced in “The Nutcracker” for the Robinson Ballet and on screen, and has appeared in Stephen King’s “The Langoliers,” and most recently as an extra in “Empire Falls.”

At Penobscot Theatre, Libbey has appeared in numerous productions. He served as an usher for Penobscot Theatre in 1977, and appeared in its Youth Theatre Production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” at 15.

Recently his work has been as executive director of The Grand in Ellsworth and as executive director of Maine Performing Arts Network, a statewide organization serving artists and presenters throughout New England.

Libbey served on the New England States Touring grant panel for the New England Foundation for the Arts representing the Maine Arts Commission for two years. He served on the committee for the National Folk Festival and is currently on the board of the New England Theatre Conference.

Together with Scott R.C. Levy, who began his tenure at the Penobscot Theatre last month, the theater is already in pre-production for its first show of the season, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” by famous actor and comedian Steve Martin. It will be presented Sept. 21-Oct. 2 at the Bangor Opera House. Levy will direct the show.
