Youth Music Camp

ORONO – More than 150 young musicians from throughout Maine and New England have been perfecting their performance skills and learning new music as they spend a week “living, breathing and thinking music” at UMaine’s annual Maine Summer Youth Music Camp.

July 15 ended a concentrated week of music immersion at the University of Maine School of Performing Arts’ Junior Camp for students in grades six through eight, and July 17 began the two-week Senior Camp for student musicians in grades nine through 12.

With an additional music theater class – a show choir – student musicians this year are tackling such productions as “Music Man Junior,” “The Pirates of Penzance” and a medley of songs from the 1939 version of “The Wizard of Oz.”

That’s in addition to participation in summer music camp’s traditional musical ensembles such as a symphonic band, concert band or chorus. Other ensembles include jazz bands, musical theater, the show choir and, for a small number of senior campers, a jazz combo.

Music camp offers instrumental and vocal ensembles for youths of varying skill levels, said camp director Ginger Yang Hwalek, a Maine music instructor, pianist, violist and conductor.

This is the 34th year for the senior program, and the 25th for the junior program.

Hwalek emphasized the importance of the university offering a music camp that provides an extended period of peer camaraderie and concentrated immersion in music with emphasis on chamber music and performance technique.

Staffing the music camp are music teachers from Maine public schools, faculty from the UMaine School of Performing Arts and UMaine music majors, who get an early look at what teaching young people is like.

“They’re learning from what I feel are top-notch mentors,” Hwalek said. “It’s very important for campers to see these great teachers at work.”

Each camp culminates in concert performances by the campers.

A schedule of events and concerts may be obtained by calling the UMaine School of Performing Arts at 581-4702 or visiting www.umaine.edu/spa.

World traveler, hotographer

NEWBURGH – Windover Art Center in Newburgh has announced its summer roster of guest artists.

The week of July 25, Thomas Abercrombie will talk to campers about his more than 40 years of traveling the globe as a photographer and writer for the National Geographic Society. Abercrombie, who is fluent in six languages, has been to every continent and the North and South poles, writing stories of his travels in Australia, Alaska, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Japan and Afghanistan, and of climbing mountains, sailing the seas and flying planes to get his stories.

Abercrombie spent two years with marine research scientist Jacques Cousteau on his ship, The Calypso, in the Mediterranean and on the African coast. He lives in Maryland with his wife, Lynn, a National Geographic Society photographer.

Assemblage artist Chris Senesi of Shady Side, Md., is scheduled for the week of Aug. 8. He will make life casts of children’s hands and “thumbtacks.”

Senesi and Windover Director Mari Abercrombie are childhood pals who shared a dream of establishing an art community that housed artists of all kinds.

Senesi creates castings with moulage, a water-based substance derived from seaweed that can be applied directly to skin. Moulage is daubed onto the subject, then it hardens. It is then removed, leaving a perfect mold for pouring plaster. The process teaches the concept of positive-negative relationship that is important in all kinds of casting.

Guest artist appearances are made possible by a grant from the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation. To register for either session, call 234-4503 or visit www.windoverartcenter.org.
