Hampden wins state softball crown

ALFRED – The Hampden softball All-Stars advanced to the Eastern U.S. Regional in Easton, Md., after defeating Biddeford 6-1 to win the state Senior League softball championship on Sunday.

Hampden advanced to the championship in the ages 15-16 tourney by winning 2-1 in nine innings over North Portland and beating Biddeford 9-0 on Saturday. Biddeford advanced to the championship game by defeating North Portland 8-3.

In the championship game, Hampden’s Michelle Wells allowed just one run on four hits and no walks while striking out seven. Eva Shannon and Amanda Palmer each doubled and singled.

Aisha Jones doubled and singled for Biddeford.

In Saturday’s first game, Hampden’s Nellie Wood scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when she raced home on a passed. Wells allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out 14.

Jen Martin and Erica Ardito each singled twice for North Portland.

In Saturday’s second game, Hampden’s Lacey Littlefield earned the shutout win by allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out eight. Palmer hit three singles and Shannon had two singles. Nellie Wood and Ashley Gott both doubled and singled.

Jones doubled for Biddeford.

Junior League

South Portland wins two

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, South Portland emerged with two victories after the first day of the state Junior League tourney.

South Portland opened with a 5-3 victory over Coastal of Blue Hill and held off Brewer 6-4 in the third game of the day. In other action, Kennebunk defeated Auburn 11-4 in the second game while Auburn came back to eliminate Coastal 8-5 in the fourth game.

In the first game, South Portland relievers John Carey, Chris Gorham and Mike DeCenso no-hit Coastal over the final three innings to secure the victory.

Jake Watson’s two-run double in the first inning staked South Portland to an early lead. Carey chipped in with a double and two singles, David Hardison singled twice and drove in a run and Chris Gorham doubled.

Ross Bowden singled twice for Coastal.

In the second game, Bobby Rollins’ two-run single broke the game open in the fourth as Kennebunk also took advantage of five Auburn errors in the five-run inning.

Rob Nutter doubled, singled twice and had three RBIs to lead Kennebunk. Pat Graydon added a double and two singles, Ian Barwise had an RBI double and single and James Morse and D.J. Stockbridge each added a double.

Billy Brewster doubled, singled and drove in a run for Auburn. Shawn Hird added two singles and an RBI and Cody Goddard had two singles.

In the third game, Gorham turned in a solid pitching performance to lead South Portland by Brewer. He gave up two earned runs while walking one and striking out eight.

Jamie Boudreau doubled, singled and had an RBI for the winners while Josh Mackie had two singles and an RBI and Elliot Pickering had an RBI double.

Eric White notched a two-run double and a single to lead Brewer and Billy Bissell added a double and single.

In the fourth game, RBI singles by Josh Mains and Cody Goddard helped spark Auburn’s four-run rally in the sixth inning and gave it the lead for good.

Goodard also earned the pitching win as he allowed one earned run and five hits while striking out seven. Hird added two singles.

Casey Hull singled twice to lead Coastal and Ross Bowden added a triple.

At Gordon Field in Rockland, Zach Leals hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to help lead York to victory.

Alex Mercurio hit three singles for York.

Nick Volger doubled for Portland North.

Bangor East 9, Waldo County 4

At Gordon Field in Rockland, Nick Ashey hit a two-run double in the first inning to spark Bangor East.

Nick Rodgerson had two singles and scored twice for Waldo County.

Dirigo 13, Waldo County 10

At Gordon Field in Rockland, Josh Bailey hit a two-run double to help lead Dirigo to the win.

Sean Cabanis and Keith Cloutier each doubled and singled for Dirigo.

Nick Rodgerson hit a single, double, and a triple for Waldo County and scored three runs.

Portland North 13, Coastal 0

At Gordon Field in Rockland, Mitchell Powers struck out eight and didn’t allow a hit to give Portland North the victory.

Michael Flaherty singled four times and scored three runs for Portland North and Ryan Casale had three singles. Nick Volger hit a two-run triple.
