On a roll

Nothing says summer like a lobster roll, and the Maine Lobster Promotion Council in Bangor is looking for the state’s best. Last year, Castine Variety took the honor. This year’s winner is anyone’s guess. To nominate your favorite roll, send the restaurant or lobster shack’s name on a postcard to Maine Lobster Promotion Council, 382 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401. Nominations will be accepted from Aug. 1 to Labor Day.

Garden variety

Looking for something to do with the 500 pounds of zucchini that suddenly appeared in your garden? McCormick’s Fresh Tomato and Zucchini Salad should make a small dent in your squash supply. To make, prepare a zesty marinade by blending 2 tablespoons each oil and vinegar and 1 teaspoon each Italian seasoning, garlic powder and ground mustard. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix 2 cups chopped tomatoes, 1 cup each green bell pepper and zucchini chunks and 1/2 cup chopped onion in a large bowl. Add marinade; toss to coat well. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with grilled fish, chicken, pork or beef, or on its own.

Book smarts

Calling all churches, civic groups and clubs: it’s time for the 16th annual Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards, which honor outstanding cookbooks and the volunteers who make them possible. Winners will receive contributions for their charities ranging from $750 to $2,500. Maine cookbooks have traditionally fared well in the contest. For an entry form and contest rules, send a SASE to: Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards, c/o Hunter Public Relations, 41 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10010 or visit www.tabasco.com.
