LINCOLN – Firefighters were battling to save a house at 95 Taylor St. shortly before midnight on Wednesday in the latest of a series of calamities to befall the one-story structure since the spring.
By midnight, firefighters had cut into the roof from opposite sides of the house and were dousing the flames with two-and-a-half-inch hose lines, but the flames were still large and visible.
No one was reported injured and the home’s owners, Scott and Ruth Birtz, were living elsewhere at the time. Four trucks from Lincoln’s fire department responded to the blaze. The house was under extensive repair at the time of the fire because its foundation had been partially washed out by a mudslide in the spring. The Birtzes were not insured against the mudslide.
“They were going to move it [the house frame] tomorrow,” said Durwood Birtz, Scott’s father, Wednesday. “What a terrible time to have this happen. It’s unbelievable.”
Electricity had been turned off at the house because of the repairs. The fire was reported at about 11:15 p.m., when the owner’s brother Mark saw flames and called the police telephone line. Durwood and Mark Birtz were watching television in an adjoining trailer when they saw orange flames and smoke starting to pour out of the basement, Durwood Birtz said.
The fire was reported under control at 12:15 a.m.
