Members of the City Council’s business and economic development committee agreed Wednesday to recommend that the full council award tentative developer status for the state court system, which has chosen a city-owned parcel at the intersection of Washington and Exchange as the site for a $37 million court construction project. The action would be taken during the council’s Aug. 8 meeting. The state court system plans to move its operations from the corner of Hammond and Court streets to a spot overlooking Kenduskeag Stream. The new modern building would be secure for the public, court staff, jurors, lawyers, defendants and others, court officials have said. In a background memo for councilors, City Manager Edward Barrett said the court system is seeking tentative developer status through Dec. 31, which should provide enough time for the city and state to work out such details as terms and conditions.
