Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy and the Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design have established a joint curriculum to offer a degree program in small craft design. According to Dr. John Barlow, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean at MMA, the college will award an associate in science degree to students who complete the joint two-year program. The prescribed course of study includes one year of instruction at Maine Maritime Academy’s Castine campus and a year of study at the Landing School’s Kennebunkport facilities.

MMA Board of Trustees unanimously voted to endorse the program at a quarterly meeting in May, culminating more than a year of discussions and curriculum development with Landing School officials.

“This is a welcome program for both schools,” said Barlow. “It’s really a resurrection of a former program offered by MMA in vessel design that continues to realize a solid demand, but one we could not maintain alone. With the Landing School’s instructional expertise, skilled faculty and fine facilities we’re now able to bring another career option to our collegiate offerings.”

The Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design was established in 1978 as a nonprofit, post-secondary institution. The school offers three yearlong programs: marine systems technician, boatbuilding and yacht design.

The new degree program is open for immediate enrollment. Prospective students must complete a dual admissions process to ensure that all prerequisites are met.

Students who graduate from Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in small craft design will be qualified under Maine law to design vessels not in excess of 200 tons or 200 feet in length overall. Donald Eley, MMA small craft design program coordinator and associate professor of marine transportation, said that graduates will be similarly qualified in other states, though regulations vary.

To learn more, call Jeffrey Wright, director of admissions at Maine Maritime Academy, (800) 464-6565, or visit www.mainemaritime.edu.
