Camden-Rockport tips Bangor East, advances

FALMOUTH – Kevin Pierce cranked a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Camden-Rockport a 3-2 win over Bangor East in an elimination game of the state Little League All-Star baseball tourney for ages 11-12 Thursday.

Jimmy Weferling hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Camden-Rockport while Tyler McFarland and Cameron Gartley combined to hold Bangor East to one hit.

Tyler Desjardins and Adam King turned in strong pitching performances for Bangor East as Camden-Rockport was held to three hits.

Ellis Throckmorton singled for Bangor East.

Camden-Rockport plays Lewiston in an elimination game at 7 p.m. Friday.

Portland North 8, Bangor East 3

At Rockland, Mitchell Powers took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth with two outs before Justin Courntey broke it up with a single. Powers struck out 7 as Portland North eliminated Bangor East.

Ted Hamilton singled twice for the winners. Bangor East scored three runs with two outs in the sixth before bowing out.

Portland North will take on York for the state title Saturday.

State baseball, 13-14

South Portland wins title

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Chris Gorham allowed only two hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter as South Portland beat Kennebunk 13-0 to capture the state Junior League title. Kennebunk had advanced earlier in the day with a 16-14 win over Auburn.

South Portland qualified for the Eastern Regional and will play the New Hampshire champ on Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. in Freehold Township, N.J.

John Carey had a two-run triple in South Portland’s title win, Jake Watson had three singles and Mike DiCenso singled twice.

Rob Nutter and Ian Barwise each singled for Kennebunk.

In the first game, Kennebunk rallied for seven runs in the seventh and scored the winning run in the eighth on two errors. Nutter doubled and singled twice for Kennebunk with three RBIs. D.J. Stockbridge added a two-run double, and Ian Barwise had two doubles and two RBIs.

Josh Mains had three singles and three RBIs for Auburn and Shawn Hird had a single, double and three RBIs.
