MOXIE GORE – A man’s body was recovered and a woman was seriously injured Friday afternoon when they were swept over Moxie Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Maine.
Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service said details of what led to the accident were still sketchy as rescuers remained at the scene. He said the two, whose names and ages were not immediately available, may have been swimming in Moxie Stream when they were swept downstream and pulled over the falls.
Dorian said the woman suffered serious neck and back injuries. The two were believed to be in their 30s.
The scenic Moxie Falls is a popular tourist attraction that is accessible by a hiking trail. It is located near a stretch of the Kennebec River that’s used by whitewater rafters. Moxie Falls drops more than 90 feet, making it one of the state’s steepest waterfalls.
