Missouri woman hurt in motor scooter crash

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – A Missouri woman who lost control of her rented motor scooter Saturday afternoon suffered multiple injuries during a crash, according to park rangers.

Mary Fales, 57, of Kansas City was riding on the Park Loop Road near Bubble Rock when the accident happened. She was not wearing her helmet, Ranger Therese Picard said Sunday.

“She had pretty good facial lacerations and upper extremity lacerations,” Picard said. “She kind of cracked her head on the pavement.”

Rangers provided Fales with initial medical attention before she was transported by ambulance to Mount Desert Island Hospital, where she was treated and then released.

The scooters, which are rented in Bar Harbor, are all over the park’s roads, Picard said.

“We’re definitely seeing them on the Loop Road … they’re going all over the island,” she said.

Picard cautioned would-be scooter riders to don helmets and check the park’s regulations before hitting the roads.

“Helmets are definitely good,” she said. “And we do not allow the scooters up on Cadillac Mountain for safety reasons – there’s no control of brakes coming down.”
