Here is a message for all firefighters throughout the state of Maine.
The annual Penobscot County Firefighters Association Parade and Muster is Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Bangor State Fair, and the group wants you to be part of it.
Muster committee member Ron Grant of Hudson called to say that members of “all departments are welcome” to participate in the muster that will take place on the racetrack at the fair.
Lineup for the muster will be conducted near the Buck Street entrance to Bass Park in Bangor by the stables, Grant said, and participants are asked to prepare for that lineup any time before 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7.
Grant really wants firefighters to understand that this muster is not for PCFA members only, there is no fee to participate, and everyone is more than welcome to take part.
Additionally, Grant said the Pine Tree Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America “will display and demonstrate antique fire apparatus and equipment.”
If you have questions about this event, call Grant at 884-8742.
As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Daigle Oil Co. has invited representatives of the Central Aroostook Humane Shelter to celebrate its Senior Pet Week with a special fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Daigle Oil Co. on Main Street in Presque Isle.
During Senior Pet Week, the shelter is offering a 50 percent discount for adoption of adult pets, some of which you can see at the Pet Adoption Center tent. The offer will be continued through Saturday, Aug. 6, at the shelter.
Shelter volunteers will be washing vehicles for a donation of $6 per car or $7 per pickup truck, and they will be collecting your returnable bottles and cans, all to benefit the shelter.
Shelter volunteer Norma Milton reports recent rescues have filled the shelter to maximum capacity, raising the cost of caring for dogs and cats.
The shelter needs more than 20 bags of litter per week, and food donations are greatly appreciated. It is also seeking volunteers to work in the morning or afternoon.
Milton also suggested this would be a good way for students 16 and older to earn credit for community service hours needed for graduation.
The shelter is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
For information, call shelter manager Betsy Hallett, 764-3441, or send donations to CAHS, Attn: Betsy Hallett, Industrial Park, 26 Cross. St., Presque Isle 04769.
Swimmers – and kayakers to assist them – are invited to participate in the fifth annual Beach to Beach Swim for Breast Cancer from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at Jenkins Beach on Green Lake.
Participants can swim any distance of their choice up to two miles, and they can enter the fundraiser as an individual or as a member of a team of six.
The event is sponsored by Eastern Maine Medical Center, the Bangor Y, Sandollar Spa & Pool and the Junior League of Bangor. This year’s goal is for participants to collect pledges and donations totaling $10,000.
Proceeds help increase awareness and raise funds for Caring Connections, which provides breast health education and services for uninsured or underinsured women in eastern Maine, as well as support groups for women with breast cancer.
For information, call Robin Long or Ro LeGasse at the Bangor Y, 941-2808.
The children of Ruth Good Stearns invite you to join them in wishing their mother a happy 90th birthday from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Stearns Homestead, 180 Main Road North in Hampden.
Linda Stearns wrote that the siblings have tried to let everyone know about the event, but fear they may have missed someone who would like to help celebrate this special day.
The hosts do request “no gifts please,” and ask only that, if you wish, you can bring a card, a picture or a written memory of their mother for her “memory box.”
If you are unable to attend but want to be part of this occasion, you can send your best wishes in care of Mary Hubbell, 26 Harbour Rd., Bennington, Vt. 05201.
