Crocker helps U.S. beat Aussies

IRVINE, Calif. – It wasn’t a world record, but Ian Crocker’s first-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly Tuesday evening helped Team USA beat Australia’s Telstra Dolphins in the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool at the Woollett Aquatic Center.

Crocker, a Portland native, recorded a time of 51.55 seconds, well off the world record of 50.40 he set last week in the World Swimming Championships in Montreal.

The U.S. swept the top three places in the event, with Davis Tarwater finishing in second place with a 53.03.

Crocker also swam the butterfly leg of the winning 400-meter medley relay. Aaron Piersol, Brendan Hansen, Crocker and Michael Phelps beat the Australians with a time of 3:36.39.

The Americans won 18 races to 10 for the Aussies. Overall, the United States outscored Australia 183-102, repeating its victory from 2003.

Phelps won two events, the 200 fly and the 200 individual medley.

The meet is conducted in a dual-meet format with both country’s world championships team pitted against each other. Each swimmer can enter up to four events, including relays, and each team can enter up to three athletes per event. Combined team scoring determines the winner.

The Duel in the Pool will air on NBC-TV Saturday, Aug. 6 from 4:30-6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7 from 1-2:30 p.m.
