KENNEBUNKPORT – A golf cart signed by former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush at the Cape Arundel Golf Club remains for sale after failing to reach the minimum reserve set by the seller on eBay.

The highest bid was $14,100 when the online auction ended on Sunday, said Jeff Ornstein from C-it-Sell, an eBay consignment shop. Since then, bidding has gone higher but remains short of the $25,000 reserve, he said.

The red cart with U.S. flags on the seat backs was given to President Bush by Gary’s House, a charity that provides a place to stay for families visiting seriously ill loved ones at two hospitals in Portland. Bush used it for several years before giving it back.

Gary’s House put it up for auction after Bush and Clinton signed it, and it was purchased by Howard Goldenfarb of Kennebunkport.

Goldenfarb thought the price he paid was undervalued, so he put it up for bid again with net proceeds going to Gary’s House.

Goldenfarb is weighing his options and will sell the cart if a buyer who’s willing to meet the reserve price steps forward, Ornstein said.

Bush and Clinton, who were 1992 election rivals, signed the golf cart on June 28 while Clinton was visiting at Bush’s invitation.

The two became friends when they led fund-raising as part of the relief effort for victims of the Asian tsunami.
