In Carle G. Gray’s letter, “Great tax-shifting game” (BDN Aug. 2), was the comment, “Democrats are not well known for opposing deficits but will use any available political pretext to oppose Republicans.”
That’s a curious comment considering Bill Clinton’s Democratic administration inherited a budget deficit and a huge national debt, both of which were wiped out during his eight years in office. The current Republican administration inherited a surplus in the nation’s coffers that in less than four years was wiped out. Now America is deeper in debt than ever and deficit spending is the current administration’s daily practice. These comments are no political pretext, they are facts.
When it comes to our nation’s financial affairs one has to ask, “Which political party is truly conservative?”
