‘Big Brother’ takes reality interactivity to new level

While many reality shows offer viewer interaction, CBS’ “Big Brother” has kicked it up a notch and is giving viewers numerous opportunities to feel like a member of the household.

America already has been given the chance to vote for their favorite “American Idol,” they’ve “Danced With the Stars” and selected the perfect pair, and now CBS is giving its viewers new opportunities to further connect with “Big Brother.”

Viewers can download cell phone ring tones, text message or vote online to influence the show, and participate in Web chats.

While I’m not a “Big Brother” fanatic, perhaps because I didn’t get into it at the start, I’m amazed at all the extras the show has to offer its fans.

With four live feed video cameras, viewers can pick one angle or choose the special “quad cam” to see it all on the network’s Web site 24/7. The only negative – it’ll cost you to tune in.

To have full access for the three-month season, you’ll dish out $29.99. For just a month, it’ll cost you $12.99, but the Web site does offer a three-day free trial for either option.

In addition, there’s the Head of the Household blog where leaders of the house use the online journal to give viewers the inside scoop on their actions throughout the week.

There also are pictures taken by housemates, opinions from former “Big Brother” cast members, and plenty of room for fans to post their own thoughts.

While it leaves room for viewers to become, shall we say, a little too involved, I admit it’s fun to surf the site and get the inside scoop.

“Big Brother 6” airs at 9 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays on CBS. And don’t forget to check out “The Early Show” Friday mornings on CBS to see a secret “Big Brother” scene not shown on primetime.
