For many years, I bought my family’s groceries at Doug’s Shop ‘n’ Save, never knowing the man behind the name, or if there even was a real “Doug.” In recent days, with the sad news of his passing and the many public tributes, I’ve begun to learn the full scope of his talents, accomplishments and philanthropy. In the summer of 2000 when I began work at Maine Discovery Museum, I discovered his particular concern for children.
Doug Brown and his wife Ana were major contributors to the museum’s Capital Campaign, setting the tone and leading the way for other business leaders and the entire community to create a museum that has become one of the country’s finest. More recently, Doug Brown contributed scholarship funds, helping to assure that the museum’s programs remain accessible to all children.
The museum staff hopes to honor Doug Brown’s memory by continuing to dedicate ourselves to making this children’s museum one of the state’s shining stars.
