Ellsworth to offer pancakes, books and history

Visitors and locals will enjoy a full and delicious day when they attend the Ellsworth Rotary Club’s Pancake Breakfast; attend one of the state’s oldest fairs, hosted by the women of First Congregational Church; take in the Ellsworth Public Library Book Sale; the Downtown Merchants Sidewalk Sale; and enjoy Living History Day at Woodlawn Museum, all on Saturday, Aug. 13, in Ellsworth.

For the 43rd year, reports member Terry Carlisle, “Rotarians will be serving real Maine maple syrup with their Maine blueberry pancakes” from 7 to 11 a.m., at “historic City Hall.”

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

The 125-year-old church fair, the library sale, and the bake sale all begin at 7 a.m., rain or shine, and will be conducted “under a large tent set up right next to City Hall,” Carlisle wrote.

“As in prior years, Rotarians will provide the popular KidCare ID photo passports for children 12 and under, and, of course, Petunia the Clown will have a balloon for every child.”

Carlisle reminds you that all proceeds from the breakfast “benefit the Rotary Club’s generous high school scholarship fund, and other local charitable organizations.”

And, back again, to entertain you while you eat will be Hancock County District Attorney Michael Povich, leading the Fletcher’s Landing Philharmonic Orchestra.

During four decades laboring “over the hot pancake griddles,” Carlisle wrote, “it is estimated that as many as 500 Rotarians” have served nearly “500,000 blueberry pancakes to more than 68,000 hungry patrons” who have the opportunity “to step back in time, and enjoy a slice of small-town life” in Vacationland.

You also won’t want to miss “Living History Day” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of Woodlawn Museum.

This event features historic re-enactments by The Ancient Ones; demonstrations of activities of days gone by; and old-fashioned games for children.

For a small fee, you can see Dr. Wilson’s Old-Time Medicine Show featuring the Feejee Mermaid, which was first exhibited at P.T. Barnum’s American Museum in 1842.

Spinner Valerie Rice, weaver Nancy Alexander, and sheep shearer Donna Kausen will be busy throughout the day in the back of the Woodlawn carriage house.

Enjoy food and beverages at the picnic tables on the museum grounds, or take advantage of special family rates to tour the museum at this event sponsored by E.L. Shea Inc. of Ellsworth.

From Jeannette Morrill of Shirley Mills comes good news about a new support group that could be of interest to many people.

Morrill has announced the Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The group is for anyone interested in, or affected by, pulmonary hypertension, including patients, caregivers, family and friends of people with PH.

Lunch will be served, information about the Pulmonary Hypertension Association will be available, and you will have an opportunity to share your knowledge and concerns about the disease.
