’50s dance to benefit Eddington’s Comins Hall

Can you find a poodle skirt? Do you have enough hair to grease? If so, get set to enjoy a Super Fun ’50s Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Parks Pond Campground in Clifton.

Mike and Selina Lufkin, new owners of Parks Pond Campground, report that those wonderfully energetic and community-minded members of Back Door Dance Studio are joining them in hosting the event to benefit the Comins Hall Building Fund.

Historic Comins Hall in Eddington is the site of many community activities and events, and area residents work diligently to keep it up and running and available for any occasion.

Lufkin wrote that while there is no admission to attend the dance, donations will be accepted, and dance lessons will be provided from 7 to 8 p.m. for those of you who’ve forgotten all the great moves you made when you were young, or those of you who haven’t yet learned them.

Then, it’s on with the fun of dancing to the music of the ’50s.

For more information about this event, call Parks Pond Campground, 843-7267.

Here’s an important reminder from Joel Gopan, a director of the Maine Air Museum in Bangor.

He wants you to know that “one of the most important planes of World War II,” the fully-restored B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey,” arrives at noon today at Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton.

The plane will be on display until it departs Friday morning, Aug. 19.

For $5 per person, weather permitting, visitors can take a tour of the plane from noon to 7 p.m, today, and from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, through Thursday, Aug. 18, at the airport.

However, if you are over 18, and have $395 to spare, you can take a 45-minute flight on “Sentimental Journey,” for which a minimum of five passengers is needed.

For reservations, call (602) 538-5675.

According to its Web site, this B-17 – which bears the likeness of the late Hollywood actress Betty Grable on its nose – is “a flying memorial and museum of the men who flew and crewed” and those who built these planes which “helped win World War II,” Gopan said.

The plane was restored by the nonprofit Commemorative Air Force Arizona Wing.

Of more than 12,000 B-17s built, only about 10 have been restored and remain airworthy today.

According to Gopan, this may be one of the last opportunities to see this plane in Maine, due to the high costs of taking it on tour.

Local teachers are invited to Teacher Appreciation Day, 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Staples, 1131 Union St. or 180 Bangor Mall Blvd. in Bangor.

The first 200 teachers attending will receive a canvas tote bag.

According to a Staples press release, many teachers spend up to $500 of their own money on classroom supplies, and Staples offers programs such as Recycle for Education to help with some of those expenses.

More information about the program can be found at www.staplesrecyclefored.com.

Staples’ Teacher Rewards program also helps teachers save on school supplies.

Information about that program is available at www.staplesrewards.com.

On behalf of the Castine Historical Society, Del Davis invites the public to enjoy viewing 65 American racing yachts arriving Monday afternoon, Aug. 15, for a three-day visit in Castine Harbor.

The yachts are part of the 149th annual cruise of the New York Yacht Club.

Representatives of CHS, Castine Yacht Club and Maine Maritime Academy will host a public welcome for visiting sailors at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in Delano Auditorium at MMA, where MMA president Len Tyler and CYC Commodore Tom Mason will offer welcoming remarks.

Following the welcome, author Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Maine state historian and executive director of the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission, will present a slide lecture, “Castine and its Architecture.”

Tours, exhibits, and other activities for the visitors will be part of the three-day celebration, and the public will be able to view the Annual Cruise committee boat, a 72-foot catamaran.

For more information, call Davis at 326-0828, or Jim Whittemore, 326-0787.
