Religion in Brief BANGOR: PLAY BALL

When a Rhode Island congregation visited a Bangor church last weekend, former Toronto Blue Jay player Tony Fernandez was on hand to put on a clinic for area children at the East Side Little League Field. Fernandez (left) helped 9-year-old Sam Bolduc during Saturday’s clinic. Fernandez has set up the Tony Fernandez Foundation, which aims to help kids in the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere develop emotionally and spiritually through the sport he loves best: baseball. Fernandez spent the majority of his career with the Blue Jays. During his eight seasons with the team, he garnered four Gold Glove Awards and was a three-time All-Star and onetime world champion. Fernandez retired from the league in 2001. Nearly 30 people from the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Providence, R.I., accompanied Fernandez and visited Redeemer Lutheran Church on Essex Street for a lobster feed and Sunday worship.
