Airplane sent to BIA to avoid Mass. weather

BANGOR – An American Airlines plane was diverted to Bangor International Airport on Sunday evening because of poor weather conditions on the East Coast, a BIA official said.

The American Airlines MD82 plane, which was headed to Boston from Dallas, Texas, was grounded at the airport at 8:10 p.m. because of the weather and congestion, which hindered air traffic, said Tony Alaimo, aircraft dispatcher for BIA.

Severe thunderstorms rolled across Massachusetts Sunday evening, The Associated Press reported.

Alaimo said Sunday night that the aircraft, carrying 136 passengers, should be on the ground for only an hour and then would continue to Boston.
