HAMPDEN – Of course there will be fireworks! People come from miles around for Hampden Children’s Day, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20.
Saturday, Aug. 20
Morning events are:
. 7-9 a.m. – Annual Hampden Kiwanis pancake breakfast, Hampden Kiwanis Civic Center, Main Road. Adults $5, $3 children under 12.
. 10 a.m. – Parade lineup, at Reeds Brook Middle School.
. 11 a.m. – Annual Children’s Day Parade, beginning at Reeds Brook Middle School and ending at Graves Supermarket. Parade awards are sponsored by the Bangor Daily News.
Afternoon Hampden Children’s Day Activities, which will run from noon to 4 p.m., are:
Kiwanis quarter booth games. Inflatable obstacle course, operated and sponsored by the Hampden Recreation Department. Horse and carriage rides, $1, $5 per family.
CHIPS, a child identification program provided by the members of Mystic Lodge Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Hampden and the Maine Dental Association. Parents will receive free fingerprint sets, dental imprints and videotapes of their children as part of the safety program.
A complete set of Harry Potter books will be raffled.
Iggy the Clown, along with the Anah Shrine clowns, will help entertain children.
Visit the tooth booth, operated by Cathy Fearon of Hampden Family Dentistry. Bounce House is sponsored by the Best Wester-White House Inn. Cake walk, operated by TDS Telecom. Slip ‘n’ Slide, operated by Project Graduation 2006.
Face painting will be done by Project Graduation 2006. Bring nonperishable items to the Hampden Neighborhood Food Cupboard and learn how it serves the community. Check out the Hampden Fire Department’s smoke trailer. Hampden Public Safety will provide car seat safety checks.
Join the Maine Discovery Museum for spin art. Play a game with A Family for Me. Pin the tail on the donkey with Hampden Democratic Committee. Visit Heart Safe Communities to learn more about automatic defibrillators in the community. Make your own play dough and have fun with Discovery Toys.
Stop by and see the Hampden Business Association. Hampden Children’s Day Information Booth will sell 50-50 tickets. Visit Graves Supermarket for face painting, games and prizes, free balloons and ice cream cones.

. Noon-2 p.m. – Live broadcast with WBZN 107.3 FM.
. 12:30 p.m. – Top Hat Dancers performing behind Weatherbee School.
. 12:45 p.m. – Northern Stars Planetarium, “ABCs of the Sky,” in Weatherbee Gym, sponsored by Pine Tree Landfill. Those interested are asked to be on time, as late arrivals will not be admitted to the dome.
. 1 p.m. – Trophies awarded for winning parade entries.
. 1-1:45 p.m. – Mad Scientist, “Fire & Ice,” in McGraw School cafeteria, sponsored by Best Western-White House Inn.
. 2 p.m. – Northern Stars Planetarium, “World of the Dinosaurs” in Weatherbee Gym, sponsored by Pine Tree Landfill. Those interested are asked to be on time, as late arrivals will not be admitted.
. 2 p.m. – Morgan Hill Dancers from Morita’s School of Dance, performing behind Weatherbee School.
. 2-2:45 p.m. – Lesson in the Moose Shuffle and the Lobsta Crawl with Walt & Mrs. Moose in the McGraw School cafeteria.
. 2:45 p.m. – Freeze Pop Giveaway, Hampden Children’s Day lemonade stand.
. 3-3:45 p.m. – Jackson Gillman, “Levity in Motion,” mime and stories for the entire family in McGraw School cafeteria.
. 3:15 p.m. – Northern Stars Planetarium, “A Ride on the Space Shuttle,” in Weatherbee Gym, sponsored by Pine Tree Landfill. Those interested are asked to be on time, as late arrivals will not be admitted.
. 7-8 p.m. – Orrington Matsumura Seito Karate Dojo, performing karate demonstration.
. 7-8:30 p.m. and 9-9:30 p.m. – Music for all ages with Sumner Rogers in the McGraw School cafeteria.
. 8:20 p.m. – Hampden Children’s Day raffle drawings and announcements. Glow ropes on sale.
. 8:30-9 p.m. – Hampden Children’s Day fireworks, provided by Blue Hill Pyrotechnics, sponsored in part by Irving and the VFW Auxiliary.
Food for the day will be:
. Hampden Children’s Day – French fries and doughboys.
. Hampden Children’s Day – lemonade, operated by the Hampden Democratic Committee.
. VFW Auxiliary – sandwiches, hot dogs, sodas and their famous strawberry shortcakes, in Weatherbee Gym.
. Kiwanis Lunch Wagon – hamburgers, hotdogs, sodas, nachos, chips, candy bars and coffee.
. D.A.R.E. – ice cream floats.
. Hampden Academy Booster Club – pizza, pretzels, corn dogs, fruit, Gatorade and iced tea.
. American Legion-Post 213 – popcorn.
Sunday, Aug. 21
. 8 a.m. – The community is asked to show appreciation for Hampden Children’s Day by volunteering some time to clean up from the festivities.
In the event of inclement weather, Sunday, Aug. 21 is the designated rain date. Tune in to WBZN 107.3, Kiss 94.5 FM or WEZQ 92.9 FM if the weather is questionable.
