CORINNA – One local teenager was killed and another injured Wednesday night when the all-terrain vehicle they were operating struck a tree while they tried to avoid horses on Sunken Bridge Road in north Corinna.
The deceased teenager was identified by Maine State Trooper Bryan Higgins as Donny Davis, 16, of Corinna. His passenger, Jordan Woodbury, 15, of East Newport, was taken by ambulance to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield for treatment of minor injuries.
According to reports, a group of three four-wheelers were traveling on Sunken Bridge Road, a dirt road that connects to an ATV trail, shortly before 7 p.m. when they came upon a group of three people riding horses. According to Higgins, Davis locked the brakes on his ATV and slid into a tree. He was wearing a helmet but speed was a factor, said Higgins.
Arnold Shorey, principal of Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, where Davis was set to enter his sophomore year, said the school’s crisis team was scheduled to meet early this morning. “The school will be open all day for students and staff to gather and guidance counselors will be available,” Shorey said.
Shorey, who has just been hired as principal this summer, said he was told by other staff that Davis was a popular student. “This is a tragedy,” he said.
