CARIBOU – A Caribou man was released on bail Monday night after he was charged with six counts of theft and burglary of vehicles.

Darrell St. Peter, 41, offered no resistance to Caribou Police Department Officers Mark Gahagan and Ryan Fitzpatrick when he was arrested at his 272 Bowles Road home in Caribou.

Officer Barry Dombrowski said Tuesday that St. Peter was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, two other counts of burglary, and three counts of theft by unauthorized taking.

He was released on $5,000 surety bail. He is scheduled to appear in District Court at Caribou on Oct. 20.

Dombrowski said St. Peter was allegedly in possession of $5,000 to $10,000 worth of merchandise that had been reported stolen in a series of burglaries that occurred from early 2004 to recent weeks.

St. Peter was charged with the same kind of criminal activity a couple of years ago and was under suspicion in the recent rash of burglaries.

“The case is an ongoing investigation,” Dombrowski said. “While the investigation is continuing, we don’t believe others will be charged.

“This started back last year,” he said. “Officers saw some of the stolen merchandise when they went to speak with St. Peter in recent days.”

Gahagan and Fitzpatrick were speaking to St. Peter about a recent burglary when they spotted merchandise that had been reported stolen. They acquired a search warrant and discovered a lot of stolen merchandise.

Dombrowski said St. Peter offered no resistance to police when he was arrested.

He said St. Peter is suspected of being involved in a long series of thefts and burglaries.
