Walking with Volkssport

BANGOR – The Southern Maine Volkssport Association offers a weekend of volksmarch events Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27-28, in Bangor and Orono.

Volkssport is German for “sport of the people.”

The American Folk Festival Walk will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, and will end at 3 p.m. or at walkers’ leisure. The walk begins at Paul Bunyan Park, meanders through downtown Bangor and finishes at The American Folk Festival on The Bangor Waterfront. The walk is mainly along city sidewalks.

The Bangor Woods-Orono Bog walk begins at 11 a.m. at the Hannaford Supermarket, Bangor Mall. The highlight of the walk will be the Orono Bog Boardwalk, which extends into a peat bog. The bog has been designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. The walk ends at 3 p.m.

Those who wish to receive IVV credit for the walks will be charged a $3 fee payable on the day of the event. Each participant must sign an insurance waiver. The event is free to those not wishing to receive IVV credit.

Dogs are welcome on the walks, but are not allowed in the Orono Bog Boardwalk.

To obtain more information about the walks, call Barbara Weymouth, 288-5216, or e-mail agitator@panax.com.

Hoops 4 Hope is open to players of all skill levels. The age categories are 14-18, and 18 and older. Teams must have three to five players. Preregistration is required. The cost is $10 per person, with a small additional fee for those interested in entering a foul shooting and-or three-point shooting contest.

The tournament will have a pool format with a three-game guarantee. The winner of each pool will be entered into a single elimination championship bracket. Proceeds will benefit Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine.
