Mission: The Defense Finance and Accounting Service came to Limestone in 1995 after the creation of a single agency to serve all four military branches: Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. The facility handles accounting for domestic Air National Guard bases and active-duty Air Force bases in Europe.

Economic impact: The facility employs 353 people, making it one of the biggest employers at the redeveloped Air Force base. The base-closing commission recommended bringing the employment up to a minimum of 600 workers.

Argument for staying open: Advocates have argued not only for keeping Limestone open but also for adding jobs because of its efficiency and low turnover rate. The jobs are highly coveted in Aroostook County, which has about 75,000 residents.

Trivia: The center is located at the former base hospital, and workers initially worked out of operating and examination rooms. The facility underwent a major renovation six years ago to create a more functional space for workers.
