DOVER-FOXCROFT – A Dexter man died Wednesday from injuries he received in a car accident on Route 7.

John Sokoloski, 21, who was a passenger in a southbound vehicle driven by Brad S. Theriault, 26, of Corinna, died shortly after the 1 p.m. accident, according to Dover-Foxcroft Police Chief Dennis Dyer.

Theriault, driving a 1987 Ford Mustang, had been passing a long line of southbound vehicles when the accident occurred, Dyer said.

Theriault managed to pass three vehicles and was attempting to overtake a log truck when he lost control of his car and it went off the road, flipped over and landed in the woods, he said. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, according to the police chief.

Dyer said Sokoloski was taken by ambulance but died either en route or when he arrived at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. Theriault, who also was injured in the accident, refused treatment, he said.

Speed was a factor in the accident and other conditions may have been present, Dyer said. Depending upon the findings of the investigation, charges could be brought against the driver, he said.

State police and investigator Jamie Kane of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department reconstructed the accident Thursday. Both agencies assisted the Dover-Foxcroft police at the accident scene.
