ELLSWORTH – The Bar Harbor teen charged in the 2003 accidental death of a friend was sentenced last week to three years of probation and a suspended term in the Maine youth correctional facility.
Jeffrey Lewis, now 18, was behind the wheel of a car that crashed in Somesville in May 2003. Michael Clint Chernosky, 16, of Southwest Harbor, was killed in the accident after the car struck a tree on the passenger side.
Speed was a factor in the crash, Mount Desert police officials said at the time of the accident.
Lewis was charged as a juvenile with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
In the plea arrangement agreed to on Aug. 18 in Ellsworth District Court, Lewis was placed on probation until he is 21. Additionally, the teen may not operate a motor vehicle until then, must do 500 hours of community service work and must abide by a curfew when in Hancock County. He also must undergo counseling.
In the juvenile petition dated Aug. 18, it stated that Lewis “created substantial risk of bodily injury” to Chernosky when he was driving at the time of the accident.
Justice Robert Murray presided over the matter.
