BANGOR – The Bangor Community Chorus invites men and women of all ages and voice ranges to attend its guest night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St. The chorus wishes to increase its membership.
From the old Ski Horse Lodge to venues in the Bangor area and throughout eastern Maine, the chorus has entertained audiences for nearly 40 years.
Founded by its first conductor, Marion Vafiades, the chorus performs traditional concerts each December and late spring and upon request during the year. It provides audiences with a repertoire of master works, show tunes, popular songs and a few “old chestnuts.” Programs are varied and interesting and filled with fun and humor.
Pianist Naomi Hall has been the chorus accompanist since 1975.
Joshua Schmersal made his debut as the chorus’s sixth conductor in 2004. He holds a degree in music performance from the University of Maine, where he was the assistant conductor of the Oratorio Society and president of the University Singers. He has been a player in many productions, including Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” His choral and theatrical experiences have been applauded throughout New England, in New York and in Europe.
Bangor Community Chorus will begin rehearsal for its 37th holiday concert soon. Rehearsals are held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St.
It is not necessary to read music or be an accomplished singer to join the chorus. Former members are urged to rejoin the group.
