Penn National casinos ravaged by Katrina

Penn National Gaming Inc. closed three of its casinos in Mississippi and Louisiana on Sunday in preparation for Hurricane Katrina.

The company soon will open Hollywood Slots on Main Street in Bangor.

As of Wednesday, Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Boomtown in Biloxi, Miss., remained closed. The third, Casino Rouge, located in Baton Rouge, La., reopened Tuesday.

The company carries comprehensive business interruption and property damage insurance for both casinos with an overall limit of $400 million, Chief Executive Officer Peter Carlino said in a press release Wednesday.

Carlino said only preliminary reports have been done on the two sites, but it appears both have suffered severe damage.

Access to the casinos is limited, so the extent of damage has yet to be determined.

Katrina displaced the casinos’ combined 2,000 employees and their families.
