WORCESTER, Mass. – A Maine man wanted in connection with an alleged drug trafficking ring that also included two Worcester police officers has surrendered to authorities.

Matthew A. McLaughlin, 33, of Kittery, Maine, is the fourth person charged with conspiring to sell the muscle-enhancing drug commonly known as GHB, or “the date-rape drug.”

McLaughlin appeared before a federal magistrate judge Monday and was released on $10,000 unsecured bond. He was also ordered to go through drug counseling and random drug testing, and his travel was confined to Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

On Aug. 25, Worcester police officers Brian W. Benedict, 33, and Heriberto Arroyo, 36, were charged in a federal indictment along with Thomas J. Vigliatura, 36, owner of T. Vig’s Sports Supplements Unlimited, in Worcester, and McLaughlin.

Arroyo and Benedict were released on $10,000 unsecured bond, while Vigliatura was held without bail. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave without pay.
