NEWPORT – Burglars entered Nokomis Regional High School on Sunday night and stole nearly $30,000 in recording and video equipment from the school’s television broadcasting department.
Police Chief Len MacDaid would not release details of the burglary Monday, but said that a comprehensive investigation has been launched and a reward is being offered. He would not say whether the investigation is centered on current or former students.
MacDaid said the burglars apparently entered the school between Sunday evening and Monday morning. Little damage was done to the building. Taken in the heist were four television cameras valued at $4,000 each, three computers, also valued at $4,000 each, and other audio-video equipment.
Nokomis Principal Arnold Shorey said Monday that the high school, which serves eight communities in Somerset and Penobscot counties, is offering a $250 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Shorey said “Warrior Broadcasting” is a credit course and despite the burglary, two cameras and a computer were left behind, which will enable the instructor, Matt Brown, to hold classes this week. Shorey said Brown and his students use the computers to edit and create DVDs of the school’s events, including sports contests.
“We also are insured,” Shorey added. Replacement of the equipment will take place as quickly as possible, he said.
