New name for BMHI

At a ceremony on Aug. 31, Bangor Mental Health Institute was renamed the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center. Gov. John Baldacci participated in the unveiling of the new sign.

State Rep. Sean Faircloth conceived the idea of renaming the institution. Dorothea Dix, Faircloth said, “is the most historically influential woman ever born in Maine.” Dix was born in Hampden in 1802 and spent her life advocating for the humane treatment of the mentally ill in campuslike settings at a time when the mentally ill were routinely chained in cellars, attics or jails, or wandered around homeless.

“The name Dorothea Dix will grow in the history books as the world recognizes her innovative approach to mental illness and mental disabilities,” Faircloth said. “Dix founded a civil rights movement. Her willingness to cast aside old thinking and to take a more compassionate approach is one that must inform and inspire all advocates of, and providers for, those living with any form of mental disability. Most importantly, the more we enshrine the memory of Dorothea Dix the more we are forced to examine our own policies and ask are they the most innovative and the most thoughtful and in keeping with the latest science. This takes bravery – which Dorothea Dix demonstrated amply.”
