Runners from all over eastern Maine will gather in Bangor on Sunday for the 23rd annual Run for Hope, formerly the Terry Fox Run, at the Best Western White House Inn off Exit 180 of Interstate 95.

The race is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m., with race-day registration at 9:30. Fees are $12 prior to race day, $15 on race day and $35 for a family.

All proceeds will benefit cancer prevention studies and clinical trials (breast, prostate, lung, colon and other cancers) at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Race director Peter Daigle said the Terry Fox Award will be handed out to former Hampden Academy football standout Ramsey Lafayette, who has been battling cancer.

Daigle said the University of Maine women’s and men’s ice hockey teams, as well as the women’s basketball team, also will participate.

“It is good to have the exposure with them. The hockey team has been great as far as supporting us,” Daigle said.

Volunteers from the running community have helped out in the past, and this year will be no different.

“Dick Balentine’s [Hampden Academy] cross country teams will help staff water stops, give splits and work the chute,” Daigle said.
