Fernandes, MacDonald power Maine field hockey to victory

ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Maine field hockey team scored three goals in the second half to rally past Ohio University 3-2 Friday afternoon.

Maine’s Joanna Fernandes tied the game on a penalty shot and Kim MacDonald gave the 4-2 Bears a 2-1 lead when she scored on a breakaway. Nicole Emery scored the eventual game-winner off an assist by Meagan Connolly. Rebecca Giroux made 10 saves on 17 shots.

Ohio’s Rachelle Coetzee scored early in the second half and Terrie Albini knocked in a late goal for the 1-3 Bobcats. Jennifer Cote stopped four of seven shots.

UMF 5, Saint Joseph’s 0

At Farmington, Andrea Tyler scored a goal in each half as the Beavers won their season opener.

Kristy Veazie posted a goal and two assists for UMaine-Farmington, while Kristi Cochin and Mary Sinclair added a goal each. Kristen Chambers chipped in with an assist and Rachel Sheloska and Lorena Borjas combined on the shutout without facing a shot.

Ellen Gagne made six saves for the Monks of Standish.

Women’s soccer

Fairfield 1, Maine 0

At Fairfield, Conn., Shannon Helm scored in the 43rd minute to lift the Stags past the Black Bears.

Laura Mrowka assisted on the goal and Brett Maron made five saves on 10 shots for 2-1 Fairfield.

Tanya Adorno stopped three of five shots for 2-3 Maine.

King’s College 7, UM-Machias 0

At Machias, King’s College scored six goals in the second half to cruise past UMaine-Machias.

Allie Akers finished with three goals for King’s College, while Marnie Chown chipped in two goals. Caitlin Fullerton and Emily Claydon added one goal apiece. Ainsley McLellan faced four shots but didn’t need to make a save.

Angela Qualey made 10 saves on 25 shots for the Clippers. UMM had a penalty kick in the second half, but Erin O’Callahan’s shot sailed over the goal.
