Thanks greatly for a well-integrated, comprehensive, sharply focused and appropriate editorial page in the Sept. 10-11 edition of the Bangor Daily News.
From the two editorials [“Remembering Sept. 11” and “Paying for Katrina”] to the Other Voices [from Dallas, concerning wetland loss] to George Danby’s cartoon [picturing Michael Heath] to letters from Ilze Petersons and Doug Allen [“Join Chain of Concern”], Trudy Ferland [“Rebuild the safety net”] and Betsy Hunter [“FEMA issued report”] – the page was a well-integrated whole.
I especially appreciate the page as the son of a volunteer buck private in World War I who was severely gassed in combat, later was sometimes without a job during the Great Depression, served again in World War II, and retired as a bird colonel in 1949. I remember when Nov. 11 was called Armistice Day, the day in 1918, when the World War (the “war to end all wars”) armistice was signed.
I will write to both Sens. Collins and Snowe and Rep. Michaud urging each to read, personally, the entire page as well as to work hard and persistently for both policies and laws that implement the recommendations in the fifth and last paragraphs of your second editorial.
