HAMPDEN – “Today’s Top Stories” was the theme for the last week of Hampden Recreation’s Kids Kamp. That week, campers were assigned tasks and together they designed a newspaper called Daily Kids.
Erica Martin, Meredith Prescott and Conary Moore took on the roles of reporters and were responsible for front page stories.
Matt Martin and Alex Demers headed up the sports desk and wrote stories about the Boston Red Sox and Kids Kamp games.
Olivia Smith and Cameron Mathies posted predictions on the weather page, offered helpful tips and compiled the local almanac.
Jacob Cunningham and Shawn Herrick enthusiastically wrote a gossip column and dished the dirt about Kids Kamp.
Mikayla Holmes, Julia Kamins and Alyssa Bean wrote the entertainment section. They reported what movies were playing at the camp, wrote about the top music videos and reviewed a movie of the week.
Riley Francis and Dante Bowden pooled their ideas and drew comics.
Abbie Hutchinson and Dana Hsaio served as photographers and Zach Ewing spent a day as co-editor of Daily Kids.
At the end of the week, campers filmed their own news broadcast. They toured WLBZ Newscenter 2 and Mike Parent told the children how the news broadcast is made. The trip highlight was to be on the green screen and give a weather report.
Lunch was a picnic at Cascade Park. Then the campers visited the Bangor Daily News, where Kimberly Whitmore of Newspapers in Education showed them how a newspaper is put together.
