Blues concert kicks off Komen race weekend

This is a busy week for those involved with the Komen Maine Race for the Cure, which begins with registration at 8 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, on the Bangor Waterfront.

Preceding that event is the Survivor Ceremony at 10 a.m.; the 1K Fun Run/Walk at 10:30 a.m., and the Aerobic Warm-up at 10:45 a.m. The awards presentation is 12:15 p.m.

If you have not preregistered, you can do so from 4 to 7 p.m. today, or from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Bangor Mall near Filenes, according to 2005 race Chairwoman Susan Patten and race Director Sally Bilancia.

Other events that are part of this annual fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation include the 3rd Annual Blues for the Cure from 8 p.m. to midnight today at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

All proceeds from the performance by local blues bands benefit the Maine affiliate of the Komen foundation.

Last year, Ray Dauphinee wrote, nearly 200 people attended and it is hoped even more will attend tonight’s show.

Tickets are $8 to hear David Mello and three bands: The Nightcrawlers, England Brothers and Frozen Swamp Choppers.

Blues for the Cure tickets are available at Fast Forms Printing on Main Street in Bangor or at the Race for the Cure registration site at the Bangor Mall.

A Complimentary Breast Cancer Survivors Reception is 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Four Points Sheraton in Bangor.

If you wish to attend this event, please RSVP with Kathy Graves at 848-7136.

The Komen Foundation has raised more than $750 million since it was founded in 1982.

ECOTAT Gardens and Arboretum is hosting two Hydrangea Wreath Workshops on one day, and preregistration is required.

The first workshop is 9-11 a.m. and the second 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at ECOTAT, located at the intersection of Route 2 and Annis Road in Hermon.

The workshop fee is $20 per person.

To register, call Betty Renaud at 947-0403.

Andrew Farnham of Levant, director of “Round-ups” for Katahdin Area Council Cub Scout packs, reminds boys and their families that these registration events are taking place this week at schools and other locations throughout eastern, central and northern Maine.

For boys in the first through fifth grades, Cub Scouting offers activities relating to outdoors, sports and academics in a fun and exciting atmosphere that helps teach the ideals of honesty, good citizenship and respect.

If you cannot attend one of the round-ups, the boys can register for Cub Scouts until the end of September by contacting their local pack leaders.

For more information, call Farnham at 581-3343 or 848-0829, log on to joincubscouting.org or call Katahdin Area Council, (800) 353-5888.

The third in a series of six “Saturday Night in Dover-Foxcroft” productions – the High Ryder Golden Oldies Show featuring music from the late 1950s and early ’60s – is 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Dover-Foxcroft’s Center for the Performing Arts.

The production is sponsored by the Southern Piscataquis County Chamber of Commerce and Center Theatre.

Event co-chair Russell Page reports proceeds will help with the restoration and operation of the 64-year-old theater and SPCCC programs.

Advance tickets are $12 and are available at Mr. Paperback and the Moosehead Factory Outlet Store in Dover-Foxcroft, and the Moosehead Messenger in Greenville.

Tickets at the door are $15, and Page reminds you that the two previous shows sold out.

The 19th annual Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at seven sites, including South School, Rockland; The Alfond Center, Waterville; and Capitol Park Rail Trail, Augusta.

The other walks are in Biddeford/Saco, Lewiston/Auburn, Portland and Rumford.

According to MCCP board member Jon Paradise, funds raised through this event assist young people such as 16-year-old Elizabeth Booth of Skowhegan, who is in her second year of treatment for Hodgkins disease.

Pledges help MCCP provide medical care and treatment, clinical-based research, comprehensive psychosocial support, charity care and a safe place, close to home, for young people with cancer.

Berla Putney, who was born and raised in Pembroke and spent most of her life there, celebrated her 90th birthday Sept. 15.

Even though that special day has passed, a shower of cards would be most welcome.

You can send belated birthday wishes to her at Collier’s Rehab Center, 33 Birch Ave., Ellsworth 04605.
