Head-on crash injures Dover-Foxcroft man

DOVER-FOXCROFT – A local man was injured Thursday when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another vehicle on Route 15.

Police said Willis Knowles, 34, was taken by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and then transferred to a Bangor hospital.

A community relations officer at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor said Thursday afternoon she had no information on Knowles and a nursing supervisor at Bangor’s St. Joseph Hospital said she could not release information.

The other motorist involved in the 11:05 a.m. accident, Erin Carroll, 36, of Dover-Foxcroft, was treated at the local hospital for ankle injuries, according to Dover-Foxcroft police Officer Dave Wilson.

Wilson said a witness told him that Knowles had been in a line of westbound traffic when he nosed his vehicle out to see if it was clear to pass and then pulled back into his lane.

He then reportedly pulled out from the lane quickly and attempted to pass but struck Carroll’s eastbound 2003 Ford Explorer head-on, Wilson said.

Knowles was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and had to be extricated from the vehicle by Dover-Foxcroft firefighters, according to the officer. Knowles’ 1995 Chevrolet Lumina was demolished. Carroll’s vehicle was damaged extensively, Wilson said.
