Jones leads MCI by John Bapst for 2nd victory Dexter, Brewer post soccer wins

BANGOR – Rodney Jones rushed for 96 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, to help lift the Maine Central Institute Huskies to a 10-6 high school football victory over the John Bapst Crusaders at Cameron Stadium Saturday night.

Jones also sacked John Bapst quarterback Kyle Gallant in the end zone during for a third-quarter safety, as well as recovering a fumble.

Victor Quint rushed 11 times for 62 yards as Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield finished with 206 yards on the ground. Mike Soulier led MCI with 16 tackles and a sack, while Cody Hart had six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Gallant scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter for the Crusaders.

Lewiston 22, Skowhegan 20

At Madison, the Blue Devils were able to hang on for the win despite a late Indian touchdown when a two-point conversion attempt failed to tie the game.

Lewiston’s Jared Turcotte scored two touchdowns, including the winning score in the third quarter. Chris Ford also had a TD run for the Devils.

Aaron Chambers led Skowhegan with two touchdowns, including the final TD of the game.

At Dexter, Ben Spizuco had eight carries for 91 yards and scored a first-drive touchdown to lead Dexter to victory.

Mike Lockhart rushed for 76 yards on eight carries for Dexter.

Steve Robinson had nine tackles for Dexter and Billy Greene had seven tackles and a sack. Dontai Keith had an interception.

Jordan Burleigh threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Lance Thibodeau in the third quarter for Stearns of Millinocket. Gene Kim had 30 carries for 147 yards.

Boys soccer

Presque Isle 5, John Bapst 0

At Presque Isle, Nate Carter scored three goals to help serve John Bapst of Bangor its first loss of the season.

Greg Whitaker added a goal and two assists, while Travis Brooker scored once and dished out an assist for the 6-0 Wildcats.

Adam Kingsbury and Chris Wilcox combined for the shutout, stopping all four shots.

Chris Smith saved 13 of 18 shots for the 4-1 Crusaders.

Dexter 7, Penquis 1

At Dexter, Rick Stewart scored three goals and Brandon Woodman had a goal and an assist as the Tigers rolled.

Tyler Sawyer, Ethan Woodman and Vinny Cangelosi each chipped in with a goal for Dexter, while Adam Eastman had an assist. Eastman and Cangelosi combined to stop six of 11 shots.

Drew Bellatty scored off an assist from D.J. Olmstead in the second half for Penquis of Milo. Nick Emery stopped 21 of 30 shots for the Patriots.

Brewer 2, Hampden Acad. 1

At Hampden, Killian Kilroy and Jeremy Proulx scored unassisted goals two minutes apart in the first half, sparking the Witches to victory.

Kilroy tied the game at 1-1 with 16 minutes left in the half, before Proulx tallied the go-ahead goal at the 14-minute mark. Chris Brady made three saves on 10 shots for 2-4 Brewer.

Martin Earley scored on a J Uhrin assist for 4-2 Hampden Academy. Max Silver made one save while facing six shots.

Field hockey

Hampden 3, Bangor 0

At Hampden, Katie Hessert stopped all three Ram shots to earn the shutout for the 5-1 Broncos.

Tini Lumino, Jenna Veinote and Sarah Hessert each notched unassisted goals for Hampden.

‘Keeper Emily Gallant stopped two of seven shots for 0-5 Bangor.

Girls soccer

Presque Isle 7, John Bapst 0

At Presque Isle, Molly Hamel and Alisen Donovan teamed up for the shutout, stopping five of six shots and boosting the Wildcats’ record to 8-0.

Sarah Gonsiorski and Rachel Blackstone each added two goals, while Kylan Smith, Sarah Porter and Kayla Legassie scored once. Katie Delong notched two assists.

For the 4-1 Crusaders of Bangor, Caroline Cassling and Taylor Greenlaw combined to save 12 of 20 shots.

Madawaska 4, Calais 1

At Calais, Ashley A. Cyr scored two goals to lead Madawaska to victory.

Courtney Hill scored an unassisted goal in the first half for 1-5 Calais. Steph Perry stopped 15 of 25 shots.

Dexter 4, Penquis 2

At Dexter, the Tigers scored four first-half goals to put Penquis away early.

Lindsay Burton notched two of those goals, while Kylie Keene added a goal and an assist. Sabrina Cote tallied the other goal.

Erin Lyford and Christina Gerrish scored for the 0-5 Patriots of Milo. Shelisha Clark saved 10 of 14 shots.

For 3-4 Dexter, Ashley Richardson made four saves on six shots.
