Students in teacher Anne Osborne’s French classes at Sumner Memorial High School are reserving the proceeds from their annual charity drive for Hurricane Katrina relief and are expanding their fund-raising effort to include the Down East community.

The Sullivan school teens are placing canisters in local businesses and community centers to help collect money for storm victims. So far, the effort has netted about $80.

The annual charity drive is a tradition among Sumner French students. Last year, they raised more than $500 for cerebral palsy aid. This year, they are expanding their campaign to include the student council, athletic council, area grammar schools and other school-related organizations.

“We want to get involved in the towns with a community-wide relief effort,” Osborne said.

Anyone wishing to make a donation may send their contribution to: Sumner Memorial High School, 2456 U.S. Highway 1, Sullivan 04664. The students are also accepting clean coffee tins with lids to be used as donation canisters. For more information, call the school at 422-3510.
