Leighton lifts Eagles to win over Vikings

ELLSWORTH – Chris Leighton beat a couple of defenders and tucked an 18-yard shot inside the near post with 30:27 remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Ellsworth Eagles their first win of the season, 3-2 over the Caribou Vikings in schoolboy soccer action Monday.

Dimitrios Katsiaficas and Chris Baez scored the other goals and Leighton had an assist. Cory Smith finished with 10 saves.

Caleb Rosser and Kyle Corrigan scored for 4-3-1 Caribou and Ken Rosser had an assist. Brad Ala finished with six saves.

Woodland 4, Washington Acad. 1

At Woodland, Brandon Tomah scored two goals and assisted on another as the Dragons beat the Raiders.

Tomah scored off a Cody Sappier assist in the first half, 19 seconds after Julian Washington’s unassisted goal for Washington Academy of East Machias. He added a second-half goal on a penalty kick.

Chad James scored two second-half goals off assists from Jeremy Burke and Tomah for 4-0 Woodland. Craig Moody made 11 saves on 12 shots.

Josiah Jackson made 19 saves on 23 shots for the 2-3 Raiders.

Shead 10, Jonesport-Beals 4

At Jonesport, Aaron Sullivan scored three goals and Mike Cummings and Cody Bulmer scored two apiece as Shead of Eastport picked up its first win after four losses.

Chris Newman, A.J. Seeley and Justin Lewey had the other goals for Shead and Dana Mitchell made four saves on 19 shots.

Jonathan Alley scored twice for 0-4 Jonesport-Beals with Mike Smith and Derek Leach getting the others. Ben Ellis made nine saves on 15 shots and Scott Smorch had four stops on 10 shots.

DI-Stonington 3, Sumner 0

At Deer Isle, Max Becton had two goals and Brian Ciomei two assists as the Mariners prevailed.

Parker McDonald added a goal and Colin Ciomei an assist for 2-3 Deer Isle-Stonington. Eben Powers had 18 saves on 19 shots.

Mason Young stopped 16 out of 25 shots for the East Sullivan-based Tigers, now 0-5.

Calais 4, Narraguagus 2

At Calais, Jacob Ludington scored a pair of goals to lift the Blue Devils to victory.

Ronan Hall and John Deacon added a goal apiece for 4-1 Calais. Scott Geel stopped 13 out of 17 shots.

Danny Bradbury and Todd Pagels tallied a goal apiece for the 1-2 Knights. Ben Grant had 10 saves on 15 shots.

Girls soccer

Ellsworth 2, Caribou 0

At Ellsworth, Lauren Peer scored one goal and assisted on another by Maggie Harding, all in the first half, as the Eagles blanked the Vikings.

Catie Cravens had six saves on seven shots for 4-1-1 Ellsworth.

Billie Martin stopped 15 out of 25 shots for 2-5 Caribou.

JV: Ellsworth 3-0

Hampden 6, Brewer 0

At Brewer, Jenna Shue led Hampden with two goals in the first half and one in the second.

Annaliese Lafayette, Lauren Jadallah and Nori Francis-Mezger each added a goal for the winners.

Michelle Wells and Siobhan Grogan combined for eight saves on eight shots for 4-2 Hampden. Carolyn Tuck had 14 saves on 21 shots for 2-4 Brewer.

Camden Hills 2, Belfast 0

At Rockport, Kayla Gushee knocked in two goals, one of which was assisted by Lexi Coleman as the Windjammers blanked Belfast.

Jessie Colson had three saves on seven shots for 5-1 Camden Hills while Katherine Kelly blocked six out of 10 shots for the 4-2 Lions.

Rockland 4, Oak Hill 2

At Rockland, Bailey Boggs scored two goals in the second half to lead Rockland to victory.

Abby Jones and Kristin Harjula each added an unassisted goal and Allie Todd had 13 saves on 15 shots for the 1-5 Tigers.

Sarah Beaulieu and Danielle Bougoin goals in the first for 0-6 Oak Hill. Courtney Seguin had 11 saves on 15 shots.

Field hockey

Waterville 2, MCI 0

At Pittsfield, Chanelle Lansley and Whitney Russo each tallied an unassisted goal for the Purple Panthers in the win.

Beth O’Brien blocked all 11 shots she faced for Waterville.

Courtney Howe stopped 11 of 13 shots for the Huskies.

Belfast 8, Lincoln Acad. 0

At Belfast, Skye Ellis scored three goals and set up another to power the unbeaten Lions to victory.

Kallie Aldus posted a goal and an assist for 6-0 Belfast, while Briana Curry, Stephanie Whittier, Heather Read an Brooke Reed scored one goal apiece. Jill Ross and Kelsey Jackson provided assists.

Liz Anderson made one save to post the shutout.

Nicole Russell came up with 11 saves for 1-4 Lincoln Academy of Newcastle.

Maranacook 1, Camden Hills 0

At Rockport, Katie Norwood fed Katie Evans off a penalty corner with five minutes to play in regulation to lift the Black Bears of Readfield to victory.

Haley Schwartz saved 10 out of 11 shots for 5-1 Maranacook.

Dale Winsper stopped four out of five shots for the 3-3 Windjammers.

Football

Belfast 8, Oak Hill 0

At Sabattus, John Walsh’s interception late in the fourth quarter deep in Lions’ territory sealed Belfast’s second win of the season.

Sean Leeman scored the game’s lone touchdown on a 17-yard run in the third quarter for Belfast. He finished with 110 yards on 21 carriers. Jake Arthurs also had an interception. The Lions’ ‘D’ held Oak Hill to 160 yards of offense, including 51 on the ground.

The Raiders’ defense stopped the Lions on two potential scoring drives early in the game, in which Belfast had driven inside Oak Hill’s 20.
