BANGOR – “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” by famous actor and comedian Steve Martin, has opened the Penobscot Theatre Co. season. The play is being presented through Oct. 2.
Directed by Scott R.C. Levy, producing artistic director of the theater, the production features set and costumes by Lex Liang, lighting by Lynne Chase, and stars Matt Mullin as Picasso, and Gabriel Sigal as Einstein. Also featured in the cast are Adam Kuykendall, Kae Cooney, A.J. Mooney, Phil Price, Jim Pendergist, Allen Adams and Paul Rhyand. The play marks Levy’s Penobscot Theatre debut.
Written in 1995, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” is Steve Martin’s first full-length play. Of the off-Broadway production, New York Newsday wrote, “Martin’s first play is a major treat.”
In the play, writer Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as he introduces Albert Einstein to Pablo Picasso. Over drinks, the two geniuses ponder the century’s achievements and prospects as well as more fanciful topics – all with Martin’s signature comedic twists.
