Skate Park Competition
The Powerhouse Teen Center will sponsor a skate competition Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bangor Skate Park, behind the Paul Bunyan Statue on Main Street. Registration is 10-11 a.m., warm-ups and demos are 11-11:45 a.m., and the competition begins at noon. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 25.
The competition is open to all ages and skill levels. It will feature beginner, intermediate and advanced skateboard competition, in-line skate competition, best trick competition. There will be prizes for first, second and third places, and prizes for all who compete.
Hot dogs, soda, baked goods and chips will be sold. Registration of $5 includes two events only. Each additional event will be $2 per event.

Skating Lessons
BANGOR – Free skate lessons are being offered 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays, weather permitting, at Bangor Skate Park, behind the Paul Bunyan Statue on Main Street.
The lessons are provided through a community service project from local skaters from The Powerhouse Teen Center in Bangor, and promote skateboarding and in-line skating through teaching, encouraging and role modeling. Participants receive exercise and learn patience, Skate Park etiquette, persistence, balance and coordination and safety.
The event is supervised by The Powerhouse Teen Center and Bangor Parks and Recreation.

National Guard team
BANGOR – On Sept. 13, the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament served as host to a team of golfers from the Maine National Guard’s Alpha Company 133rd Engineer Battalion. Golfing for the Guard were Carl Sticht, Paul Lawrence, Harold Whitten and Preston Ward.
Berry, Dunn, McNeil and Parker, and the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono sponsored the Guard team.
Academic All-Americans
HAMPDEN – Hampden resident Elise Doucette helped the Regis College swimming and diving team extend its national record when it was named an Academic All-American Swimming Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the spring 2005 semester. A sophomore majoring in nursing and a swimmer for the team, Doucette is a graduate of Hampden Academy.
Regis, located in Weston, Mass., is the only college on any competitive level to have earned Academic All-American status since the award was initiated in 1989. The Regis record now stretches to 30 consecutive semesters.
To qualify, the school must average at least a 2.8 grade-point average for the entire swimming and diving squad, including all team members on the eligibility list.
