BANGOR – The Bangor Rams passed the football early, rushed it late, and defended throughout in a 24-0 victory over Cony of Augusta at Cameron Stadium on Friday night.
The win was the third straight for 3-1 Bangor, and marked the Rams’ third shutout of 0-4 Cony in as many years.
Bangor junior tailback Alex Gallant rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries, while sophomore quarterback Ian Edwards passed for 149 yards, including a 75-yard TD pass to senior wideout Tyson Barron.
But the real constant on this evening was the Rams’ defense, which held Cony to 147 total yards – including just 80 passing yards on 31 attempts.
“What we were concerned about with their offense was the pass,” said Bangor linebacker Chris Wilcox. “They’ve got a strong pass game, but we were pretty confident we could shut them down both on the pass and the run and we did it.”
The Rams needed that kind of defensive effort because Bangor’s lead was only 10-0 through three quarters.
Tyson Barron gave Bangor a 3-0 lead, capping a 45-yard game-opening drive with a 31-yard field goal 3:28 into the contest. A 33-yard pass from Edwards to sophomore tight end Ryan Weston set up the score.
Cony’s best scoring bid came late in the period, after Anthony Gayne recovered a fumble at the Bangor 16.
Cony got as far as the 8 before Bangor forced a pair of Gabe Hinds pass incompletions, and a 25-yard field goal try by Trever Pierce went wide right.
Bangor struck three plays later, on a third-and-5 slant pass from Edwards to an open Barron in the middle of the field.
Barron made the catch, then outsprinted the last Cony defender to the end zone to cap off a 75-yard TD play with 11:12 left in the first half.
“Everybody knows Bangor’s a hardcore running team, so they were definitely thinking run and we just hit a slant,” said Barron. “It was an amazing throw by Ian, the line did a great job of blocking, and he hit me with a seed.”
That would be the last score until the final period as both teams struggled with turnovers – Bangor finished with four and Cony had three.
“It just kept [the defense] on our toes and made us realize that we couldn’t make mistakes and we had to keep on top of things,” Wilcox. “We couldn’t let something big go and let them get something that would give them some charisma.”
Finally, Bangor rediscovered its hardcore nature and mounted a 13-play, 74-yard march capped off by a 1-yard scoring run by Gallant with 5:52 left in the game.
Gallant carried the ball 11 times for 57 yards on the drive behind the line play of center Andy Gould, tackles Robert Seccareccia and Adam Kearns, guards Jon Thompson and Mark Sturgeon, and tight ends Weston and Tyler McDade.
“We’re a second-half team, we can’t get tired, we’ve got to keep pounding,” said Sturgeon. “That’s what we do.”
An interception by Wilcox on Cony’s next series set up Bangor’s final score, a 2-yard run by senior wingback Ben Silver with 2:18 left.
“We learned a lot,” said Bangor coach Mark Hackett. “That’s the most physical game we’ve played this year, and it was both ways.
“They were giving it to us, and we gave it to them, and it really took us four quarters to get the run game going.”
