WINSLOW – Good teams take advantage of opportunities and that’s what the Winslow Black Raiders did in taking a 30-0 halftime lead en route to a 37-21 Pine Tree Conference Class B football victory over Hampden Academy on a cloudless, crisp Saturday at Poulin Field.

After Hampden’s Bobby Seger bobbled the game’s opening kickoff, he held onto the ball but was gobbled up by a sea of Winslow defenders at the Hampden 8-yard line. The Raiders then forced the Broncos to a three-and-out, took over at the Hampden 31, and scored four plays later when Jared Maroon burst up the middle for a 7-yard TD.

Leading the Winslow offense on the day was junior tailback Justin Lindie, who returned from an ankle injury to rush for 94 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns, his first two of the season.

“He should hopefully be a little bit better next week,” said Winslow coach Mike Siviski. “He adds a good dimension to us.”

Winslow improved to 4-0 while Hampden slipped to 2-2.

Winslow’s offensive line – featuring Mike Rancourt, Josh Mellows, Bryon Fogg, Kevin Harrison and Matt Gould – paved the way for 249 yards on the ground.

“We did a good job [on the ground],” Siviski said. “They gave us some trouble for a while; they sent the house and overloaded some zones.”

Junior quarterback Stephen Siviski, the coach’s son, said one area the Raiders have to improve on is playing a complete 32-minute game.

“We know we’re gonna have to play all four quarters,” he said. “We can’t let up at all.”

Another area Winslow must improve on is limiting penalties. The Raiders were flagged nine times for 93 yards.

“That’s just stuff we can work on [in practice],” Stephen Siviski said.

Siviski completed 6 of 13 passes for 93 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown to John Goulette in the second quarter, when the Raiders opened the floodgates with 24 points.

Lindie started the second-quarter scoring with a 3-yard TD run and later broke loose for a 36-yard score. The Black Raiders added a safety when the ball sailed over the head of Hampden punter Chris Morris and out of the end zone.

Winslow’s scoring was capped on a 10-yard scamper by Maroon late in the third quarter.

The Broncos made some key mistakes early that cost them in this tough road game against the Raiders, the defending Eastern Maine Class B champion. In the first half, Hampden netted just two first downs and had minus-7 yards rushing.

“Any way you cut it, I don’t think we played well in the first half,” said Hampden coach Harry McCluskey. “They just outplayed us, no two ways about it.”

McCluskey was impressed with the way his team didn’t quit, scoring 21 fourth-quarter points.

“Anytime players don’t quit and keep playing, that’s a real good thing to build on,” he said.

Morris threw a pair of touchdown strikes in the quarter, 50 yards to John Lovell and 60 yards to Kyle Sparacio. The senior quarterback completed 7 of 17 passes for 151 yards.

Senior fullback Som Ratsakongsky paced Hampden’s rushing attack with 41 yards on 11 carries, and he scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.
