Dexter knocks Stearns from unbeaten ranks

DEXTER – Jana Kenney’s goal with 28:17 left in the game lifted the Dexter Tigers by the previously unbeaten Stearns Minutemen 1-0 in high school field hockey action Saturday.

Vanessa Hartford assisted on the winning goal for 7-1 Dexter and Katie Poirier made 16 saves on 17 shots.

Katie Poirier had 16 saves on 19 shots for 7-1 Dexter while Deanna Michaud stopped 6 of 11 shots for 6-1 Stearns.

JV: Dexter 1-0

John Bapst 3, Hermon 0

At Bangor, Christina Andrle knocked in two goals and had an assist to pace the Crusaders.

Meagan Tilton added the other goal, while Marci Scofield and Ashley Freeman picked up assists for 7-1 John Bapst. Hillary Laferriere saved both shots she faced.

Carrie Cole made 18 saves on 21 shots for Hermon, which falls to 1-6.

Hampden Aad. 4, Brewer 0

At Brewer, four Broncos scored unassisted goals to seal the win.

Shaina Dennis, Sarah Hessert, Paige Doble and Darci Greenacre recorded the goals. Katie Hessert earned the shutout, saving one of three shots for Hampden, which improves to 7-1.

Zora Merrill faced 12 shots and made six saves for the 0-7 Witches.

Central 1, Mattanawcook 0

At Corinth, Hillary Haney scored the winning goal on an assist from Traci Underhill.

Kara Voisine stopped the only shot she faced for 7-1 Central while Sarah French made 35 saves on 36 shots for 4-4 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Football

Orono 57, Boothbay 40

At Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, senior tailback Mardy Simon rushed for 438 yards on 21 carries and scored seven touchdowns to lift Orono to the Class C nonconference victory over previously undefeated Boothbay.

Simon, who entered the game as the leading rusher in the LTC, went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season – with still have the regular-season schedule remaining.

Simon now has 1,024 yards on 64 carries, an average of 16 yards per carry.

Simon scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, three on runs of 55, 30 and 50 yards and the fourth on a 35-yard pass from junior quarterback Jared Bussell, as the Red Riots built a 35-8 lead en route to their third straight win.

Travis Dunton added Orono’s other touchdown on a 1-yard run, while Jon Brothers was perfect on seven extra-point tries.

Simon also had a big game defensively for the Red Riots with 13 tackles and an interception. Millard had a game-high 21 tackles for the Red Riots.

Boothbay quarterback Roy Arsenault completed 18 of 28 passes for 236 yards, including three TD strikes to Pat Norton.

The Seahawks did close within 42-34 in the third quarter before Simon ripped off a 76-yard touchdown run and Nyasha Millard rushed for the two-point conversion to restore Orono to a 16-point lead.

Presque Isle 7, Foxcroft Acad. 0

At Presque Isle, Kylan Smith had two goals and one assist, helping the Wildcats maintain their unbeaten record at 9-0.

Rachel Blackstone also had two goals, while Kayla Legassie, Katrina Whittier and Sarah Gonsioroski added one a piece. Allisen Donavan earned the shutout by stopping Foxcroft’s only shot.

Brittany Fadley made 17 saves on 26 shots for the Ponies, who fall to 3-5-1.

Bangor Christian 9, Katahdin 2

At Bangor on Saturday, Morgan Chasse had three goals and three assists at Bangor Christian earned its fourth straight victory.

Amber Leathers also scored three goals for the Patriots, while Christin Pelletier had two goals and an assist and Brooke Hale added a goal and an assist. Meredith French contributed two assists for BC, which held a 4-0 halftime lead.

Mariah Bach made 13 saves on 15 shots for 5-1 Bangor Christian. Kayla Stevens made 21 saves on 30 shots for 0-7-1 Katahdin.

John Bapst 8, Caribou 1

At the Dorothy Dix Field in Bangor, Whitney Sinclair scored three goals and Hayley Cutri notched three assists to help the Crusaders improve to 6-1.

Kari Havnewick added two goals and Molly Jones chipped in with a goal and an assist for the winners. Kristina Hambrock and Taylor Greenlaw each added a goal and Abby Perkins, Catherine Lammert and Sara Lammert had an assist apiece. Caroline Cassling made five saves on eight shots.

For 2-6 Caribou, Billie Martin made 19 saves on 33 shots.

Searsport 2, Penquis 1

At Searsport, Annette Anderson scored both of the Vikings’ goals in the first half to give the team an early boost.

Erica Lyford scored for the Patriots in the second half on a penalty kick. Johanna Kutz made 15 saves on 21 shots.

April Pickering saved seven of 12 shots for Searsport.

Schenck 3, Deer Isle-Stonington 0

At Deer Isle, Gabrielle Rioux notched a goal and an assist to lead the Wolverines of East Millinocket.

Courtney McLaughlin and Whitney Lyons each added a goal for 3-4 Schenck. Robin Larlee saved six of eight shots.

Anika Powers faced 23 shots for the 3-4 Mariners and saved 16.

Bangor 4, Lawrence 0

At Bangor, Ilyse Angst recorded her seventh shutout of the season, stopping all seven of the Bulldog shots.

Courtney Stevenson, Amy Hackett and Erin MacDermott each tallied a goal and one assist for the 7-1 Rams. Jennie Lucy added the other goal.

Katye May made 14 saves on 24 shots for Lawrence, which falls to 2-5.

Hampden 1, Messalonskee 1

At Oakland, Hampden Academy’s Annaliese Lafayette scored with 29:11 left to forge the tie with host Messalonskee.

Michelle Wells had 12 saves on 26 shots for 5-2-1 Hampden.

Kate Tong scored 5:32 into the game for 5-0-3 Messalonskee, while Katie O’Leary stopped five of 18 shots.

PVHS 3, PCHS 1

At Howland, Ashley Dawson and Morgan Cyr each scored second-half goals as the Howlers broke open a 1-1 game at intermission.

Lyndsay Drost scored her team’s first goal 10 minutes into the game for 5-2-1 PVHS, after Jessica Crouse had given the 1-5-1 Pirates of Guilford a 1-0 lead.

Jill Martell made 14 saves on 22 shots for PCHS.

Jenn Plourde saved six of nine shots for the Howlers.

Orono 2, Dexter 0

At Orono, Heather Woodbrey and Brittney Pinkham combined for the Red Riot shutout, saving seven of nine shots.

Lauren Wheeler had a score and one assist, while Lindsey Colbath added the second goal for Orono.

Ashley Richardson made 11 saves on 17 shots for the Tigers.

Boys soccer

GSA 2, Central 1

At Corinth, Austin Dobson scored the winning goal assisted by Phineas Peake with 6:14 remaining.

Peake scored the tying goal with 9:15 left. Collin Henry had 13 saves on 20 shots for 4-2-1 George Stevens Academy.

Danny Kane scored for Central with an assist from Tyler Speed. Charles Haney stopped 14 of 21 shots for 4-3 Central.

Presque Isle 7, Foxcroft Acad. 0

At Presque Isle, Nate Carter tallied three goals for the undefeated Wildcats, now 8-0.

Greg Whitaker notched a goal and had two assists. Trent Legassie added a goal and one assist, while Brandon Adams and Travis Brooker scored the other two goals.

For the 0-5 Ponies, Evan Bridges saved 19 of 26 shots.

Caribou 2, John Bapst 0

At Bangor, goalie Brad Ala saved all 14 of the Crusaders’ shots to help seal the win for the 5-3-1 Vikings.

Caleb Rosser scored both goals, while Carl Corrigan had one assist.

Chris Smith made six saves on eight shots for 4-3 John Bapst.

Bangor Christian 7, Katahdin 1

At Bangor, Ignacio Bustos scored three goals and had one assist for the winners.

Adding to the scoring were Brock Bradford with two goals and two assists, and Matt Denbow and Josh Griffin with one goal each. Micah Dougherty and Josh Frost also had assists. Frost had 17 saves on 20 shots for 7-0 Bangor Christian.

Burton Brayall saved 30 of 35 shots for 5-3-2 Katahdin.

Schenck 3, DI-Stonington 1

At Deer Isle, Stephen Deveau, J.C. Bresnahan and Trevor Violette all scored in the second half to lead Schenck of East Millinocket to victory.

Lanny Thompson had 13 saves on 14 shots for 3-2-1 Schenck.

Miles Douglas scored for Deer Isle 10 minutes into the first half while Eben Powers stopped 13 of 16 shots for 2-5 Deer Isle-Stonington.

Islesboro 3, Highview Chr. 3

At Charleston, Collin Schmitt scored two goals for Islesbor, one with an assist from John Cunningham.

Mike Piscotta had 12 saves on 20 shots for 1-2-1 Islesboro.

Josh Mountain, Jana Philbrick and Zack Frich scored for Highview Christian. Andrew Richard saved 16 of 25 shots for the 0-2-2 Knights.

Greenville 3, Richmond 0

At Greenville, Richie Chilson scored two goals in the second half with both assists from Jonah Lizotte.

Joe Jardine headed in a corner kick from Kyle Whitman 1:05 into the game.

Brandon Lavigne had 13 saves on 17 shots for 6-0 Greenville while Kyle Lancaster saved five of 25 shots for 5-1 Richmond.
