UMFK women win two Husson, UM-Machias, UMF record victories

UNITY – Mindy Watson scored three goals to lead the University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals by the Unity College Rams 6-2 in women’s soccer action Sunday.

The Bengals edged Aroostook County rival, the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls, on Saturday, 1-0.

Maria Williams added two goal on Sunday and Amber Nadeau scored once for the 3-3-1 Bengals, who led 1-0 at halftime.

Karla Berman scored two goals for 1-3 Unity.

Whitney Settergren made six saves on 12 shots for UMFK. Annie Carter made 13 saves on 24 shots for Unity.

In Saturday’s game, Maria Williams scored an unassisted goal 30:01 into the match for the Bengals.

UMPI outshot the Bengals 23-12, but Heather Hartman made 23 saves for UMFK. Johanna Bubar made 11 saves for 4-3 UMPI.

Husson 3, Johnson State 0

At Johnson, Vt., on Sunday, Deidra Ham scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles to victory.

Kaylin Caron also scored for the 5-4 Eagles, while Shelby Morissette, Kelly McHatten and Shaina Goode had assists.

Leah Drew did not have to make a save in the Husson goal. Jackie Brennan made six saves for 2-7 Johnson State.

MMA 3, Castleton 2

At Castleton, Vt., on Sunday, Kristin Gabor headed in an Ashley Douglass corner kick with 8:53 remaining to give Maine Maritime Academy the win.

Jessica Taylor and Amy Asselin also scored for the 7-3 Mariners, who are now 5-0 in North Atlantic Conference play.

Amy Yandow and Lindsey Kendall scored for 6-2-1 Castleton.

Meghan Marshall made five saves on 14 shots for MMA. Kim Allen made one save on seven shots for Castleton.

UMM 6, College of St, Joseph 2

At Machias on Sunday, Erin O’Callahan scored four goals to lead the host Clippers to the victory.

Leila Schanck added two goals and two assists for UM-Machias, while Sterlynn Clendenin also had two assists.

Angela Qualey of Benedicta made 12 saves on 18 shots for UMM, while Sarah Palhett made 11 saves on 21 shots for the College of St. Joseph (Vt.).

UMF 8, Mount Ida 1

At Farmington on Sunday, Jodie Welch and Julie Walters each scored twice to lift the University of Maine at Farmington to the win.

Erin Campbell, Susan Fitton, Bailly Hovey and Kathrina Berger also scored for UMF, now 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Jamie Hurd scored for Mount Ida.

Melissa DeMerchant, Alix Raymond and Lindsay Shumway combined to save all 10 Mount Ida shots they faced.

Erica Belanger had five saves on 13 UMF shots.

Thomas 3, Lasell 2

At Waterville on Sunday, freshman Brittany Morin scored her ninth goal of the season and Jessie Craft made 10 saves as Husson edged visiting Lasell.

Karen Demers and Toby Martin also scored for 4-4 Thomas, while Morin added an assist.

Katie Gryckiewicz scored two goals for the 2-5-1 Lasers.

R.I. College 2, Saint Joseph’s 1

At Providence, R.I., on Sunday, Erika Haaland headed in a corner kick from Krista MacKinnon with 20 minutes left to lift the Anchorwomen to victory.

Caitlin Gavin scored to give RIC a 1-0 halftime lead, but Danielle McLaughlin tied the game early in the second half.

Krissie Pyzynski made one save on five shots for 4-3 RIC. Lindsay King made 10 saves on 22 shots for 6-2 Saint Joseph’s.

UMF 0, Lasell 0

At Farmington on Saturday, the University of Maine at Farmington outshot Lasell 14-7 but had to settle for a scoreless tie Saturday.

The Beavers also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. UMF goalie Melissa DeMerchant made five saves in goal.

Southern Maine 1, Keene State 0

At Keene, N.H.,, senior Eva Hanson’s first-half goal was enough for the Huskies to beat the Owls for the first time since 1997.

The goal was scored off a rebounded shot. Mindy Morneault made eight saves on 10 shots for 6-2 USM.

Sarah Campbell faced 13 shots and saved eight for 5-1-2 Keene.

Castleton 2, Husson 1

At Castleton, Tracy Stale scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans in the second half.

Kaylin Caron put the Braves on the board early with an unassisted boot, but 6-1 Castleton tied the game when Amy Yandow scored two minutes later.

Leah Drew made four saves on 13 shots for 4-5 Husson, while Kim Allen faced 11 shots and made one save.

Colby 5, Trinity 0

At Waterville, Liza Benson made six saves to help the Mules gain the shutout.

Laura Williamson and Katie McCabe each had a goal and one assist to pace 3-1 Colby. Kara McCabe, Lauren Goethais and Amanda Comeau each added a goal.

Tara Finucane stopped 10 shots on 17 attempts for 3-2 Trinity.

Endicott 2, Saint Joseph’s 0

At Standish, Erin Curry earned the shutout for Endicott.

Lindsay Fallon and Ashley Meunier each notched goals, boosting the team’s record to 5-3.

Mandy Gosselin faced 25 shots and made 12 saves for 0-5 Saint Joseph’s.

Men’s soccer

Castleton 2, MMA 0

At Castleton, Vt., on Sunday, goals by Ryan Hahn and Tyler Critchlow lifted Castleton to the North Atlantic Conference victory.

Josh Heath made three saves on 16 shots for 4-3-1 MMA. Matt Vernon and Ben Colona made three saves on 12 Maine Maritime Academy shots.

Husson 1, Johnson State 1

At Johnson, Vt., on Sunday, Shane Coffin scored on an assist from Chris Cacela with five minutes left in regulation to rally Husson to the tie.

Michael Greico had scored on a Joe Radano assist 31:25 into the match to give Johnson State the lead.

Chris Jackson made five saves for 6-4-1 Husson. Andrew Lane made eight saves for 3-4-2 Johnson State.

Mount Ida 3, UMF 2 (OT)

At Farmington on Sunday, Craig Cameron had a goal and assist for the University of Maine at Farmington, but Mount Ida got a goal in overtime to edge the Beavers in North Atlantic Conference play.

Joe Conway also scored for UMF, now 1-5-1 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

Lasell 2, Thomas 1

At Waterville on Sunday, Mike DeWire’s penalty kick with eight minutes left lifted Lasell past the host Terriers.

Lasell’s Jeff Danso scored the lone goal of the first half, but Tyler Simpson tied the match with 18 minutes to play.

Lasell outshot Thomas 34-6, with Ryan Conrad making 12 saves for he 0-6-1 Terriers.

UMFK 2, UMPI 1

At Presque Isle on Saturday, Jules Bodo and Migual Gomez scored goals as the University of Maine at Fort Kent avenged an earlier loss to the Owls.

Jamie Rodriguez assisted on both goal for the 2-3-1 Bengals.

Travis Parent scored for 3-3 UMPI off a Patrick Rogers corner kick.

Nick Thibodeau made eight saves on nine shots for UMFK. Scott Clenchy made seven stops on nine shots for UMPI.

Keene State 4, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, freshman Mike Cooley recorded a pair of goals to lead Keene State.

Eric Scott and Pelse Mesa each notched a goal for the Owls, who improve to 8-0. Cal Mintz made three saves on seven shots.

For 1-5-1 USM, Chris Willard saved five of 23 shots.

Colby 1, Trinity 0 (OT)

At Waterville, Monty Hankin scored his first goal of the season in overtime to help the Mules improve to 2-2 on the season.

Keeper Josh Kahane saved 14 shots on 16 attempts to earn the shutout.

Zac Trudeau saved nine of 11 shots for 1-4 Trinity.

Castleton 5, Husson 4

At Castleton, Vt., five Spartans recorded goals to help hand Husson its first conference loss.

Jesse Brown, Nate Williams, T.J. Mazza, Gerrit Marino and Ryan Hahn each scored for 5-3 Castleton.

Oscar Ody led the Braves with two goals and an assist. Shane Coffin, and Pat St. Hilaire also scored for 6-4 Husson. Chris Jackson and Kyle Kamal combined for five saves on 22 shots.

Dan Gregory made nine saves on 22 shots for the Spartans.

Lasell 3, UMF 0

At Farmington, Mike Liotta scored 63 seconds into the match to propel Lasell to a North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington.

Bol Anyoun and Mike DeWire added goals, DeWire’s coming on a penalty kick.

Lasell outshot 1-4-1 UMF 17-5, with Beavers’ goalie Eric Stailing making six saves

UMaine 1, BU 1 (2OT)

At Boston, Kevin Forgett scored off a header to put the Black Bears up 1-0 in the first period.

The Terriers tied the game when Neil Hlavaty scored from a Roland Erlichman assist. Zach Riffett saved three of nine shots for 2-4-1 BU.

Chad Mongeon made six saves on 15 shots for Maine, now 2-5-1.

NHTI 4, Unity 1

At Unity, Brandon Boyle, David Mwangi, and Nick Squires each scored a goal in the second half to lead New Hampshire Technical Institute by Unity.

Chris Barker scored the first half goal while Bryan Conway had 13 saves on 14 shots for the 6-1 winners.

Daryl Aresco scored with an assist from Matt Belonick while Tyler Ferguson stopped 14 of 18 shots for 5-2 Unity.

Volleyball

UMaine notches split

At Hanover, N.H., the UMaine Black Bear volleyball team split its pair of matches Saturday at the Dartmouth Invitational.

Maine defeated Harvard 23-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-26 in its first match, led by Lindsay Allman who had 19 kills. Kaili Jordan, who was named to the all-tournament team along with Allman, added 17 kills.

The Black Bears lost their next match against Dartmouth 30-28, 27-30, 26-30, 26-30. Shelley Seipp registered 56 assists in the losing effort, totaling 97 on the day for the junior. Lawson added five blocks, while Jordan had 21 kills.

Shannon Fotter posted 23 kills and eight blocks during the tournament. Allman finished with 35 kills, 31 digs and two service points, while Jordan totaled 38 kills and 12 digs.
